New York, Aug 9: A 27-year-old woman and a five-month-old baby girl died after a boat capsized in New York Harbor on Saturday night, police said.

The incident occurred near Liberty Island, home to the Statue of Liberty. The New York Police Department (NYPD) said its dive and aviation units were dispatched to the area after a 911 caller reported the boat had capsized at around 10:25 pm.

Twelve people were rescued from the water following the incident. Police divers later located the woman and the infant and pulled them from the water.

Both were rushed to a hospital, where they were pronounced dead, police said. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the woman and the baby were related.

The US Coast Guard said investigators were heading to the scene to interview the vessel's captain as authorities continued efforts to determine what caused the boat to capsize.

No arrests have been made so far, according to the NYPD.

The investigation into the incident is continuing.
