Mangaluru, Aug 11: With the objective of fostering a spirit of service, cooperation, environmental consciousness, preservation of land and water, respect for the nation and its language, and national integration among students, the inauguration ceremony of the newly established National Service Scheme (NSS) Unit of Yenepoya Pre-University College, Jeppinamogaru, Mangaluru, was held at the YMCA Hall, Kulshekar.
The programme was presided over by the principal of the college, Ujwal Rodney Menezes.
The chief guest, Dr Kavitha K R, joint director, Directorate of Collegiate Education, Mangaluru, inaugurated the programme by lighting the ceremonial lamp. In her address, she emphasized that the younger generation should develop social responsibility along with academic excellence. She encouraged the students to become individuals with strong values through NSS and to contribute towards positive social transformation.
Dr Vineetha, former NSS coordinator of Mangalore University and former evaluation officer of Roshni Nilaya, graced the occasion as the guest of honour. She guided the students on the importance of NSS and their responsibilities towards society.
Dr Ashwini Shetty, director, extension and outreach activities, Yenepoya (Deemed to be University), participated as the resource person and provided the students with a comprehensive introduction to the various activities and programmes carried out under NSS.
As part of the programme, the NSS flag and T-shirts were unveiled, followed by the NSS pledge.
The dignitaries present on the dais included Sinan Zakaria, academic advisor of the institution and director of Yenepoya Advanced Learning, and the Programme Officers of NSS Units 1 and 2, Anoop and Akshatha K Ail.
Rumana Yasmeen, a student of the college, rendered the NSS song melodiously as part of the prayer. Anoop, programme officer, welcomed the gathering, while Akshatha delivered the vote of thanks. The programme was compered by Aparna, lecturer.
The programme concluded successfully and meaningfully with the active participation of the teaching and non-teaching staff and students of the college.
