Kasargod, Aug 12: A tragic incident occurred at Uppala where an eighth-standard student drowned while he had gone to bathe in a pond with his friends.

Abubakar Asan (13), son of Ali and Sulaika of Peringadi in Uppala, died in the incident. He was a student of Mangalpady Government High School.

The incident occurred in the evening on Tuesday August 11, in a pond near his house.

Abubakar had gone to bathe with his friends. While all the others returned home after bathing, Abubakar suddenly went missing. A search was conducted in the surrounding areas, but there was no trace of him.

Later, when nearby CCTV footage was examined, it was found that the boy had drowned in the pond.

Local residents and fire and rescue personnel who arrived from Uppala conducted a search and finally retrieved the boy from the water late at night. He was immediately taken to a hospital, but doctors declared him dead on arrival.

The body has been kept at the mortuary of Mangalpady Taluk Hospital.

A case has been registered at the Manjeshwar police station in connection with the incident, and police have initiated further investigation.
