Tehran, Aug 13: Iran has rejected US President Donald Trump’s claim that the United States has “total control” over the Strait of Hormuz, insisting that the strategic waterway will remain closed until its demands are met.
The Persian Gulf Strait Authority (PGSA), in a post on X, said repeated statements by Trump and other US officials claiming that the Strait was no longer blocked did not reflect the situation on the ground.
“The Strait of Hormuz remains blocked and will not be reopened until Iran's conditions are accepted,” the authority said.
Trump, in a post on Truth Social, claimed that the US had “total control” over the Strait and would retain it. Describing the American naval deployment in the region as a “WALL OF STEEL”, he said there was “nothing Iran can do about it”.
The US President also claimed that Iran’s military infrastructure had been severely weakened and criticised the country’s economic situation.
Iran’s newly appointed Supreme National Security Council chief Mohsen Rezaei separately warned that Tehran would not fully reopen the waterway until Washington met its demands.
Rezaei said Iran wanted the US to end what Tehran described as the war and blockade, release Iran’s frozen assets and agree to a region-wide ceasefire, including in Lebanon and Gaza.
“Until all conditions are met, the Strait will remain closed,” he said in a post on X.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important maritime chokepoints, with a significant share of global oil shipments passing through the waterway. Any prolonged disruption could have major implications for international energy markets and shipping.
The latest standoff comes amid heightened tensions involving Iran, Israel and the United States. Washington has increased its naval presence in the Gulf, while diplomatic efforts continue behind the scenes to ease the crisis and restore normal maritime traffic.
Commercial vessels continue to operate under heightened security conditions, but the situation remains volatile as negotiations focus on preventing further escalation and keeping the vital shipping route open.
