Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Aug 13: An on-duty Railway Protection Force (RPF) jawan has been suspended and a departmental inquiry ordered after he allegedly assaulted people at Parli railway station in Beed district during a late-night altercation, with authorities suspecting that he was under the influence of alcohol.

The incident occurred shortly after midnight on Wednesday when the jawan confronted a group of people present on the station premises. A verbal argument reportedly escalated into a physical confrontation.

A Sridhar, South Central Railway chief public relations officer, said the jawan had been placed under suspension with immediate effect pending an inquiry.

“During the course of his duty, the RPF jawan noticed some unauthorised people and attempted to remove them from the station premises. During the process, he allegedly quarrelled with and assaulted some people,” Sridhar said.

He added that the jawan was suspected to have been under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.

Local accounts alleged that the jawan also behaved aggressively with some women passengers. However, railway authorities said the allegations could not be confirmed.

“It is unclear whether unauthorised people had come to drop off their relatives or were just wandering about,” a senior railway official said.

The departmental inquiry will examine the circumstances surrounding the incident and the conduct of the RPF personnel while on duty.
