Udupi, Aug 14: The newly formed Udupi Konkans was formally launched with a prize distribution and felicitation ceremony held in Udupi, bringing together community leaders, artists, professionals and well-wishers with the vision of connecting the Konkani-speaking community across the Udupi Diocese and working towards social, educational and economic development.
The programme was presided over by Dr. Leslie Clifford D’Souza, bishop of Udupi diocese. Fr Denis D’Souza, dean of Udupi deanery and parish priest of Mother of Sorrows Church, Udupi; Fr Vincent Crasta, director, Anugraha; Philomena Cornelio; Walter Nandalike, founder of Daijiworld media; Regan Lewis of Daddy’s Art Gallery; Rajan Lewis and other dignitaries were present.
‘Bring Out the Golden Buddha Within Every Individual’
In his keynote address, Fr Denis D’Souza spoke about the vision behind Udupi Konkans and said that Rajan Lewis had the spark and initiative to start an organisation that could bring people together.
He compared every individual to a ‘Golden Buddha’, saying that each person possesses unique talents and abilities — whether as a businessman, agriculturist, artist or professional. He said Udupi Konkans aims to bring out this potential and provide a platform for people to grow and contribute to society.
He highlighted the objectives of connecting people across the Udupi diocese, promoting growth and contribution, creating opportunities in employment, education, business and entrepreneurship, and building a better future.
The organisation also aims to connect parishes across the Udupi diocese and collaborate with other community organisations in Udupi and beyond. He noted that the Udupi diocese is blessed with people possessing immense talent and potential.

As part of the programme, Bishop Dr Leslie Clifford D’Souza launched the official website, UdupiKonkans.com, marking another step towards strengthening communication and connectivity among the community.
Philomena Cornelio, Peter Lewis and Walter Nandalike Felicitated
Philomena Cornelio, artist Peter Lewis, Walter Nandalike and Bishop Dr. Leslie Clifford D’Souza were felicitated during the programme.
Speaking after receiving the felicitation, Peter Lewis said that ‘art without heart is impossible’. Recalling his journey into the world of art, he spoke about the importance of passion and dedication and congratulated all the budding artists who participated in the art competition.
‘Peter Lewis is Our Community’s Pablo Picasso’
Walter Nandalike, in his address, spoke about the value of art and questioned why people are willing to pay substantial amounts for paintings, emphasising the value created through an artist’s talent, discipline and dedication.
Describing Peter Lewis as the ‘Pablo Picasso of our community’, he encouraged young artists to remember that discipline, dedication, hard work and commitment are essential for achieving success.
Nandalike said Udupi Konkans should not become just another organisation, but should develop into a unique organisation in the region. He stressed the need to listen to the younger generation as society continues to change.
He also called for the organisation to address social issues affecting the community, including property disputes and divorce, and to create awareness about various government schemes and opportunities available to people.
He expressed hope that Udupi Konkans would reach greater heights under the leadership of Dr Vincent Alva.
‘Udupi Konkans Can Give the Community a New Identity’
In his address, Bishop Dr Leslie Clifford D’Souza congratulated Peter Lewis and the participating artists, appreciating the dedication and experience that went into creating the paintings.
He said families play an important role in shaping society and observed that the community has historically been known worldwide as Mangalureans. He expressed hope that Udupi Konkans could help establish a distinct identity for the community in the coming years.
The bishop emphasised the need for young people to remain connected to their native place and encouraged the youth to take calculated risks and explore new opportunities.
He called upon Udupi Konkans to become a ‘Voice for Truth’ and ‘Voice for Justice’ in society and stressed the importance of never forgetting one's roots and contributing to the development of the community.
Focus on Education and Healthcare
The bishop also expressed concern about the changing educational landscape and the need to provide quality education to the younger generation.
He proposed strengthening educational institutions and working towards establishing at least one school at the deanery level, with a focused approach towards quality education.
He also highlighted the need for institutions in areas such as nursing, healthcare, engineering and medicine.
He said work is already being undertaken towards building Grorreeti Hospital, with the initiative and cooperation of priests, nuns and community leaders.
The bishop also acknowledged and appreciated the services of Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo to the diocese of Udupi.
39 Artists Participate in Art Competition
A total of 39 artists participated in the art competition and presented their paintings.
Clearance Fernandes announced the names of the winners, while all the participants were honoured for their contribution. Bishop Dr Leslie Clifford D’Souza felicitated the participants.
The event was welcomed by Dr Vincent Alva, while Leslie Aroza compered the programme. Advisor Wilson D’Souza proposed the vote of thanks.
The launch of Udupi Konkans and the recognition of artists marked the beginning of an initiative aimed at bringing together talent, leadership and community participation while creating opportunities for social, educational, professional and economic development in the Udupi region.
