New Delhi, Aug 14: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday paid tribute to the victims of the Partition of India, remembering their courage and resilience on the occasion of Partition Horrors Remembrance Day.

In a post on X, Modi described Partition as one of the most painful chapters in India's history, saying it shattered countless lives, uprooted families and caused immense human suffering.

The Prime Minister also highlighted the resilience of those who survived the tragedy, noting that many rebuilt their lives despite unimaginable hardships and went on to contribute significantly to the country's development.

Modi said the occasion should strengthen the country's resolve to preserve harmony and brotherhood and collectively work towards building a Viksit Bharat.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar also paid tribute to those who suffered during Partition and acknowledged its immense human cost and far-reaching geopolitical consequences.

Jaishankar praised the courage and resilience of people who rebuilt their lives after the tragedy and stressed the importance of remembering the painful lessons of that period in history.

Partition Horrors Remembrance Day is observed in India on August 14 to honour those who lost their lives and those who were displaced during the Partition of 1947.

The Partition of British India into India and Pakistan triggered one of the largest mass migrations in human history. An estimated 20 million people were displaced, while widespread violence and loss of life left a lasting impact on generations of families across the subcontinent.
