China’s Experimental Maglev Train hits 800 kmph in 5.3 seconds

Beijing, Aug 14: China’s experimental maglev technology has achieved another major milestone, with a test vehicle reportedly accelerating from a standstill to 800 kmph in just 5.3 seconds.

The ultra-high-speed maglev vehicle achieved the feat on a 1-km test track at the Donghu Laboratory in Hubei province, according to media reports. The trial focused on rapid acceleration, stability and control at extremely high speeds.

The 1.1-tonne experimental vehicle had earlier reached 798 kmph. In December 2025, the same system had accelerated to 700 kmph in just two seconds, marking another step in China’s efforts to develop next-generation maglev technology.

Maglev trains use magnetic forces to lift the vehicle above the track, eliminating direct contact and reducing friction. Electromagnetic forces generated through coils along the track then propel the vehicle forward.

At such extreme speeds, precise track alignment is crucial for safety and stability. According to Chinese state media CGTN, deviations on the test track are maintained within 0.5 millimetres.

Maglev technology is already used for passenger services in China and Japan, although commercial operating speeds remain far below those achieved by the experimental vehicle. China’s fastest commercial high-speed rail services can reach around 350 kmph.

The latest trial also tested the vehicle’s ability to slow down safely after reaching extreme speeds. After touching 800 kmph, the experimental vehicle was brought to a complete stop over a distance of nearly 200 metres.

Researchers also tested high-power energy supply, levitation control, electromagnetic propulsion and emergency braking technologies as part of the trial.

Chinese researchers are also exploring maglev systems that could operate inside low-pressure or near-vacuum tubes. Such technology could reduce air resistance and potentially allow vehicles to travel at even higher speeds.

China has invested heavily in next-generation maglev technology. In 2020, CRRC Qingdao Sifang unveiled a prototype designed to reach speeds of up to 600 kmph. Researchers at Southwest Jiaotong University in Chengdu are also developing high-temperature superconducting maglev systems aimed at exceeding 600 kmph.

The latest 800-kmph vehicle remains an experimental platform and is not intended for passenger service at present. Researchers are studying whether technologies developed through such trials could eventually contribute to ultra-high-speed transport and other advanced applications, including aerospace and aircraft launch systems.
