Alibag, Aug 14: A mother's instinct to protect her child came to the fore in a touching incident in Alibag, where a woman injured in a bike accident held her 20-day-old baby tightly to her chest even as she fell onto the road, ensuring that the infant escaped unharmed.
Geetanjali Sachin Sharma had travelled from Nagaon to Alibag with her husband Sachin Sharma and their two children for shopping. The family was travelling on a bike and had reached the Smart Bazaar area in Alibag when the vehicle suddenly developed a mechanical problem and came to a halt.
Geetanjali, who was seated behind her husband, lost her balance and fell onto the road. She sustained injuries and remained unconscious for some time. However, even as she fell, she continued to hold her 20-day-old baby firmly against her chest.
Despite being injured herself, Geetanjali ensured that her infant remained protected. Her three-year-old daughter was also travelling with the family at the time of the accident.
The incident moved people at the spot. After former Alibag municipal president and construction committee chairman Prashant Naik learnt about the accident, he immediately arranged assistance. He sent his bodyguard and social worker Sagar Perekar to the spot and ensured that the injured woman was taken to the district hospital for treatment.
Moreshwar Bhagat, Nikhil Tabib, Bhushan More, Nishant Kamble and Amulkumar Bhalgat also rushed to help. Their timely assistance enabled Geetanjali to receive medical attention without delay.
Following a medical examination, the doctors on duty advised her to undergo a CT scan. Journalist Jeevan Patil from Bhakarwad made his ambulance available free of cost for the purpose and also bore the cost of her medicines and treatment.
The Alibag incident also brought back memories of a similar heart-rending incident in Uttar Pradesh a few months ago, when a woman who was travelling with her family for tourism reportedly held her child tightly until the end after their boat sank in a lake. The woman's determination not to let go of her child despite being in danger had touched many people at the time.
In Alibag too, Geetanjali's actions showed how a mother can put her child's safety above her own pain and danger. The incident has become a touching example of a mother's love and courage in the face of adversity.
The prompt assistance extended by local citizens and the gesture by journalist Jeevan Patil also highlighted the spirit of humanity and compassion shown during the emergency.
