Mangaluru, Aug 15: Loretto Central School celebrated the 80th Independence Day of India on August 15 at the school ground with patriotic spirit. The celebration brought together the school community to honour the nation and remember the sacrifices of the freedom fighters.
Chief guest, Dr Cyprian Monteiro, former director of DSEL, Government of Karnataka. Fr James D’Souza, manager, Loretto Central School, Fr Jason Vijay Monis, principal, and Richard Miranda, PTA vice president Isaac Vas Parish Council vice president, graced the occasion.
The chief guest, Dr Cyprian Monteiro, hoisted the national flag. In his address, Dr Cyprian Monteiro said that among all the festivals we celebrate, Independence Day stands above all, as it reminds us of the freedom we are blessed with. He reminded the students that they are fortunate to be born in an independent nation and should always remember those who sacrificed their lives for the country.
He encouraged the students to move beyond the mindset of ‘I’ and ‘my’ and develop the spirit of ‘we’ and ‘our.’ He spoke about the significant role of Mahatma Gandhi in India’s freedom struggle and urged the students to follow his principles of truth and non-violence. He also highlighted the efforts of the Government in promoting education and encouraged students to learn about the various educational schemes and make use of the opportunities provided to them.
Fr James D’Souza, manager, in his address, reminded the gathering that although we were not born when India attained independence, we have been given the opportunity to remember and honour the sacrifices of the freedom fighters. He emphasised that it is our responsibility to continue their efforts and contribute to the progress and development of the country. He stressed the importance of replacing ‘I’ with ‘we’ and ‘mine’ with ‘ours,’ as collective effort and unity lead to success. He also spoke about India’s unity in diversity and the importance of staying united.
The students presented a cultural programme that added to the patriotic spirit of the celebration. Divi Shetty delivered the Independence Day speech.
The welcome address was given by Enora and Iona, and the programme was compered by Britney and Joanna. Dhanush proposed the vote of thanks.
Members of the management committee, parishioners, PTA members, parents, teachers and students joined the celebration with great enthusiasm and patriotic spirit.
