Mangaluru, Aug 15: Expert Pre-University College, Valachil celebrated India’s 80th Independence Day with patriotic fervour. Col. A K Jayachandran (Retd.) was the chief guest and hoisted the national flag at ‘Time Square’ on the campus.
Addressing the gathering, Col. Jayachandran said that the freedom we enjoy today was won through great sacrifices and must be safeguarded.
“India was a poor nation at Independence. Today we are the world’s fourth-largest economy and have reached the South Pole of the Moon,” he said.
Urging students to help build a ‘Viksit Bharat’ by 2047, he called on them to be confident, responsible and courageous citizens. He asked them to take three pledges: to be worthy of soldiers and freedom fighters, to protect the nation’s freedom, and to live by the spirit of the national anthem, not just sing it.
Prof Narendra L. Nayak, chairman, Expert Group of Institutions, greeted everyone on the occasion and stressed the need to learn the history of the freedom struggle. He urged students to strive for excellence and bring pride to the country.
Dr. Ushaprabha N Nayak, vice chairperson, administered the oath to the newly elected students’ parliament members. She noted that leadership comes with responsibility and expressed gratitude to soldiers guarding the borders.
Students presented patriotic songs. Prof Nayak and Dr Ushaprabha Nayak felicitated Col. Jayachandran with a memento.
Vivan Gudadinni, a II PUC student, was honoured by the chief guest for his achievement in a national-level Olympiad examination.
Shashank P T welcomed the gathering. Subramanya Udupa, principal, proposed the vote of thanks. Amrutha and Sunil Kumar Mummigatti compered the programme.
