Sangli, Aug 18: A dispute over garbage dumping at a doorstep turned fatal in Maharashtra's Sangli district after a woman and her husband were allegedly attacked by a neighbour, with both later succumbing to their injuries, police said on Tuesday.

The incident occurred in the Kupwad area, where a quarrel had broken out between neighbours over garbage allegedly being dumped outside a house.

According to officials, the dispute escalated when Farid Abdul Shaikh allegedly attacked the couple, identified as Manisha Mohan Kesarkar and her husband Mohan Kesarkar.

Manisha died on the spot, while her husband suffered serious injuries and was admitted to a civil hospital for treatment. He succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday, turning the case into a double murder.

Police have arrested the accused, Farid Abdul Shaikh, in connection with the incident.

Following the deaths, an agitated crowd comprising the victims' relatives and local residents gathered at the hospital. They demanded that the accused be tried in a fast-track court and given the strictest possible punishment.

Couple allegedly killed by sons in Ghaziabad

In a similar incident involving a dispute over a seemingly trivial issue, a couple was allegedly assaulted and strangled to death by their sons over a property dispute in Ghaziabad last month.

According to officials, the accused allegedly slapped and kicked their parents before attempting to suffocate them with their bare hands and later strangling them with a towel.

The attack reportedly took place only hours after the couple had organised a kirtan to mark the birthday of their elder son.

After receiving information about the incident, police reached the spot and rushed the injured couple to hospital, where doctors declared them dead during treatment.

Police detained the brothers, identified as Deepak and Lalit.

Investigators said both brothers were married and had children, but their wives and children did not live with them as the accused were unemployed.

Officials said the father had repeatedly insisted that his sons find employment, which frequently led to arguments between them.
