West Bank: Knife-wielding attacker killed after attempting to stab IDF soldier

West Bank, Aug 21: A knife-wielding attacker was shot dead by Israeli forces after allegedly attempting to stab an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) soldier in the Jenin area of the West Bank on Thursday, according to the IDF.

The attacker reportedly approached an IDF soldier with a knife in an attempted stabbing. Soldiers responded by opening fire, killing the attacker, the military said.

No injuries were reported among IDF personnel in the incident.

The incident comes amid increased Israeli military operations across the West Bank. Earlier this week, IDF troops raided more than 100 houses near Jenin and detained two suspected terrorists during an operation in the area of Kabatiya.

According to the IDF, undercover counterterrorism commandos from the Duvdevan unit carried out the operation with intelligence support from the Shin Bet. The two detained suspects were allegedly involved in planning and promoting attacks against Israeli citizens and security forces.

The military operation also came under scrutiny after Army Radio reported that soldiers had written numbers on the bodies of Palestinian suspects during the operation. The IDF said security forces had marked suspects who were being interrogated as part of the operation and added that commanders had addressed the seriousness of the conduct with the soldiers.

The IDF has increased its presence across the West Bank in recent weeks amid a rise in Palestinian attacks and violence involving Israeli settlers. The military has deployed 26 battalions across the West Bank, according to reports.

The latest deployment increase followed a deadly shooting near Gilad Farm, adding to concerns over the escalating security situation in the region.
