Neyveli, Aug 26: A history-sheeter wanted in connection with a recent murder was shot in the leg by police after he allegedly attacked personnel with a sickle at Neyveli, police said.
The accused, identified as Gopi, had been on the run following the murder of Naresh on August 16, according to police sources.

Acting on specific information about his whereabouts, a special police team traced Gopi to a secluded hideout inside a cashew and casuarina grove near Muthandikuppam and Pulavankuppam.

As the police team surrounded the area and asked him to surrender, Gopi allegedly attempted to break through the cordon and escape.

Police said Gopi was armed with a sickle and allegedly attacked the personnel when they tried to stop him. Facing an immediate threat, the officers opened fire in self-defence, hitting him in the leg.

Police subsequently disarmed Gopi and took him into custody.

The injured accused was admitted to Cuddalore Government Hospital for emergency treatment and was reported to be in stable condition.
