Udupi, Aug 27: Udupi Town police have arrested two persons in connection with a series of house burglaries and recovered gold and silver ornaments, foreign currency, cash, vehicles and other valuables worth an estimated Rs 23.56 lac.
The arrested persons have been identified as Arun S V (43), a resident of Perampalli, Udupi, and Kaushik (19), a resident of Garadimajalu, Udupi.
The case came to light after Sanam (39), wife of Yaseen and a resident of Bhagavathi Layout, Vasuki Nagar, Puttur village, Udupi, filed a complaint on August 12. She had been staying in Dubai with her husband and child and had returned to her hometown. After her husband left for abroad, she went to a relative's house on August 8.
When she returned home at around 11.30 am on August 11, she found that the terrace door had been forcibly opened using a weapon. On checking the house, she found that AED 10,000 in foreign currency and Rs 14,000 in cash kept in a drawer had been stolen. Based on her complaint, Udupi Town police registered a case.
Following directions from senior officers, a special team was formed under the guidance of Udupi Town police inspector Mahesh Prasad and led by PSI (Investigation) Prakash. The team comprised Prasanna C, Jeevan Kumar and Anand, along with Manipal police personnel Mallaiah Hiremath and Hemanth Kumar.
Acting on credible information, the police arrested Arun and Kaushik at Santosh Nagar, Perampalli, on August 23. They were subsequently produced before the court and taken into police custody for further investigation.
Police recovered foreign currency and notes worth approximately Rs 2 lac, 1.360 kg of silver ornaments valued at around Rs 2,86,730, gold coins weighing 1.45 grams valued at approximately Rs 22,500, an autorickshaw worth around Rs 4 lac, Rs 33,000 in cash, two mobile phones worth around Rs 13,000, a stolen Pulsar motorcycle valued at approximately Rs 45,000, a foreign wristwatch worth around Rs 30,000 and 88.400 grams of gold valued at approximately Rs 13.26 lac.
According to police, the accused were involved in five cases and targeted locked houses. They allegedly travelled on a stolen motorcycle and broke into houses when the occupants were away.
The cases include a burglary at the house of Shashirekha in Kodankur village during the first week of August, registered at Udupi Town police station; the theft at Sanam's house in Bhagavathi Layout, Puttur, on August 9; the theft of a Pulsar motorcycle belonging to Sandesh from a garage near Nejaru Mosque on July 10, registered at Malpe police station; a burglary at the residence of Trupthi Avinash in Kelarkalabettu on July 17; and a burglary at the residence of Ravi Upadhya in Kelarkalabettu on July 14.
Police further said that the first accused, Arun Acharya, had earlier been involved in a POCSO case registered at Manipal police station in 2016. He had served nine years in prison and was released from Parappana Agrahara Central Prison in July 2025.
The operation was conducted under the direction of Udupi District superintendent of police Hariram Shankar, IPS, and the guidance of additional SP Sudhakar Naik and Udupi sub-division DySP Belliyappa.
Udupi Town Police Inspector Mahesh Prasad led the investigation, while PSI Prakash, Prasanna C, Jeevan Kumar, Krishnadevadiga, Anand Ganiga, Anand S, Obalesh and other Udupi Town police personnel, along with Manipal police personnel Mallaiah Hiremath and Hemanth Kumar, assisted in the operation.
