Kozhikode, Aug 28: A youth who allegedly posed as a police Sub-Inspector, seized narcotic drugs from suspected peddlers and later sold the contraband has been arrested, police said on Friday.

The accused has been identified as Rojith, a native of Chungam Kallithod near Feroke in Kozhikode district.

According to police, complaints had been received from several parts of Kozhikode city about a person posing as a Sub-Inspector and allegedly extorting money from youths. Following the complaints, the District Anti-Narcotics Special Action Force (DANSAF) launched an investigation.

Acting on specific information gathered during surveillance, the DANSAF team, along with Feroke police, apprehended Rojith at Vaidyarangadi in Ramanattukara on Thursday night.

Police said Rojith allegedly conducted searches at various locations while posing as a DANSAF officer and seized illegal drugs, particularly MDMA, from people. He would then allegedly sell the seized drugs to buyers, carrying out financial transactions and making substantial profits.

He also allegedly extorted money from people caught in possession of drugs, police said.

Although only 2.5 grams of MDMA was recovered from him at the time of his arrest, investigators suspect that he had possessed and sold drugs to several buyers in Kozhikode city.

Police also seized handcuffs, an air pistol, fake police identity cards and passport-size photographs of Rojith wearing a police uniform during the search.

The investigation has been expanded to trace his financial transactions, bank accounts and possible links with drug peddlers, police said.
