Buenos Aires, Aug 31: Drawing the curtains on an illustrious two-decade-long international career, Argentine football legend Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from the national team. The 39-year-old superstar revealed that the recent passing of his father and Argentina's heartbreaking loss to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final profoundly influenced his decision.
Taking to Instagram on Monday, Messi shared a deeply emotional farewell note with his fans. He disclosed that the retirement message was originally penned on July 21, just two days after the 1-0 defeat against Spain, but the recent tragedy involving his father cemented his resolve to finally step away from the game at the international level.

"It was a decision that hurt, and still hurts deeply, but I understand that this is the right time," Messi expressed in his statement.
Stating that he has nothing more left to give to the national team, Messi emphasised the importance of stepping aside to make way for the emerging younger generation of players who deserve their opportunity to shine.
Reflecting on his journey, the talismanic forward wrote, "I swear I always gave everything — not just during the last few years when we won everything, but before that too. I always fought and gave my all for this shirt, to bring you joy and make you feel proud to be Argentine."
He also extended his heartfelt gratitude to his family, teammates, and every coach and official who accompanied him on his beautiful yet challenging journey.
Messi bows out as one of the greatest to ever play the sport and remains Argentina's all-time leading goalscorer, having netted 125 goals in 207 appearances over 21 years. His glittering international trophy cabinet features an Olympic medal in 2008, back-to-back Copa America titles in 2021 and 2024, the Finalissima in 2022, and his crowning glory—the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Though he valiantly carried La Albiceleste to the 2026 World Cup final, a fairy-tale ending was denied by Spain.
"Now I will be one of you, always supporting and cheering from the outside," the football icon concluded, signing off with a passionate, "Thank you, God, for making me Argentine. Let's go, Argentina!"
