Mumbai, Sep 2: India’s gross Goods and Services Tax (GST) collection rose 14.8% year-on-year to Rs 1.99 lac crore in August 2026, driven largely by a sharp increase in GST revenue from the import of goods, according to provisional data released by the Ministry of Finance on Tuesday.
The August collection was, however, slightly lower than the Rs 2.11 lac crore collected in July 2026.
Domestic revenue contributed Rs 1.37 lac crore in August, registering a 9.3% increase from Rs 1.25 lac crore collected during the same month last year. Gross import revenue surged 29% to Rs 62,604 crore.
Of the total gross GST revenue, Central GST (CGST) stood at Rs 38,413 crore, State GST (SGST) at Rs 46,316 crore, and Integrated GST (IGST) at Rs 1.15 lac crore.
GST refunds also witnessed a sharp increase, rising 67.9% to Rs 31,795 crore in August 2026 from Rs 18,935 crore in August 2025. Domestic refunds accounted for Rs 18,490 crore, while export refunds stood at Rs 13,305 crore.
After adjusting for refunds, net GST revenue increased 8.3% to Rs 1.68 lac crore in August 2026, compared to Rs 1.55 lac crore in the corresponding month of the previous fiscal.
Net domestic GST revenue rose 3.4% to Rs 1.18 lac crore, while net customs revenue increased 22.3% to Rs 49,299 crore.
“While gross GST revenue expanded by 14.8% year-on-year, domestic collections grew 9.3%, whereas import-related GST surged 29%, indicating that trade-linked activity continues to make a disproportionately higher contribution to revenue buoyancy,” said Manoj Mishra, Partner and Tax Controversy Management Leader at Grant Thornton Bharat.
Among the states, Maharashtra recorded an 8% rise in domestic GST collections to Rs 28,779 crore. Karnataka registered a 13% increase to Rs 14,148 crore, while Gujarat’s collection rose 15% to Rs 12,047 crore. Uttar Pradesh recorded a 19% increase to Rs 9,092 crore.
However, some states witnessed a marginal decline. Tamil Nadu’s GST collection fell 1% to Rs 10,189 crore, while Rajasthan recorded a 2% decline to Rs 4,148 crore. Odisha reported a 7% fall, with collections standing at Rs 3,895 crore.
