Washington, Sep 10: US President Donald Trump has promised a $5,000 dividend to every adult American citizen if Republicans retain control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate in the November 2026 midterm elections.

Trump made the announcement while addressing the Republican Party’s midterm convention in Dallas on Wednesday, linking the proposed payout to what he described as the strong economic performance of his administration.

Trump said the proposed dividend would have to be spent within the United States. However, he did not provide details on how the payments would be funded, when they would be issued or what mechanism would be used to distribute the money.

The proposal comes as Republicans prepare for the November midterm elections, in which control of both chambers of Congress is at stake. Trump, although not a candidate in the elections, has placed himself at the centre of the Republican campaign.

The proposed payout could involve a huge financial commitment. Reports estimate that a payment of $5,000 to hundreds of millions of eligible adults could cost more than $1 trillion, depending on eligibility criteria. Questions are also likely to arise over congressional approval and the legal mechanism required to make such payments.

Trump has previously floated other proposals involving direct financial benefits. His administration launched the ‘Trump Accounts’ programme for eligible children born between January 1, 2025 and December 31, 2028, including an initial $1,000 government contribution to qualifying investment accounts.

The latest announcement is also separate from Trump’s earlier proposal for tariff-related rebate payments of around $2,000. The new $5,000 dividend is specifically tied to Republicans retaining control of both the House and Senate in the upcoming midterm elections.

Trump’s latest promise marks a major financial pledge as he seeks to rally Republican voters ahead of the November polls.
