Mangaluru, Sep 14: Skywatchers and residents across Mangaluru were treated to a breathtaking celestial display on Monday evening as a bright crescent Moon and Venus came together in a close alignment, coinciding with the celebrations of Ganesh Chaturthi.

The striking pairing of the waxing crescent Moon and exceptionally bright Venus was clearly visible in the western evening sky shortly after sunset. While regions across central and southern India experienced a rare lunar occultation where the Moon briefly passed in front of the planet, observers in coastal areas enjoyed a stunning view of this close planetary conjunction.

Explaining the phenomenon, the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) notes that an occultation in astronomy occurs when one celestial body passes in front of another, temporarily obscuring it from view. In the case of a lunar occultation, the Moon appears to move in front of other distant objects in the sky, such as planets or stars. Because the Moon is relatively close to the Earth, these occultations are visible only from specific vantage points on the globe, similar to how a solar eclipse can only be seen from particular regions. For those in the direct path, the Moon completely blocked Venus, while viewers in places like Mangaluru witnessed a spectacular near-miss conjunction.

According to astronomical calculations, the alignment occurred as the Moon and Venus tracked through the evening sky. The brilliant luminescence of Venus alongside the delicate curve of the lunar crescent captivated festival-goers who stepped out after Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations, with many capturing photographs of the rare alignment.
