Mangaluru, Sep 17: An undertrial prisoner at the Mangaluru district prison created a major ruckus demanding beedis (smoking tobacco) and issued severe threats to the prison superintendent.

The accused, identified as Mohammed Faizal, went to the prison kitchen on the morning of September 14 and obstructed the preparation of meals. He allegedly threatened the inmates working in the kitchen, ordering them to halt cooking until the superintendent provided him with beedis.

Faizal then gathered fellow inmates and approached the superintendent's office, threatening that he would not allow any food to be cooked until his demand was met. Furthermore, he warned that if meals were prepared, he would drop a lizard or a cockroach into the food, create a massive controversy, and ensure the official's transfer.

When prison officials subsequently locked the kitchen gate, Faizal allegedly grabbed a nearby gas cylinder and started banging it against the gate and its lock. Shouting loudly, he demanded the gate be opened and threatened to detonate the cylinder.

A case has been registered at the Barke police station, stating that the accused provoked other inmates, gathered them together, and incited them not to return to their cells until they received beedis, thereby causing a commotion and obstructing prison officials from discharging their duties.
