Bahrain, Sep 19: Yakshagana shares a rich, unbroken bond spanning nearly four and a half decades with Kannada Sangha Bahrain. Holding the historic distinction of being the first organisation to take this traditional art form across geographical borders (Seemolanghana) complete with a full-fledged orchestra of musicians (himmela) and performers (mummela), the island nation frequently echoes with the rhythmic, thunderous beats of the chende.
The vibrant folk art of coastal Karnataka is once again set to dazzle Bahrain. On Friday, September 25, the cultural auditorium of Kannada Sangha will host its much-anticipated annual flagship extravaganza, 'Yaksha Vaibhava - 2026'. This grand showcase promises a rare confluence of acclaimed visiting guest artistes from home and exceptional local talent from the Sangha, bringing two captivating mythological episodes to life: 'Lakshmi Swayamvara' and 'Vali Moksha'.
A historic collaboration on stage
Commencing sharply at 4:30 pm on Friday, September 25, this event marks a watershed moment in the island's cultural calendar—uniting local Bahrain-based performers with celebrated guest artistes flown in from India for a landmark joint staging of 'Lakshmi Swayamvara' and 'Vali Moksha'.
The performance will weave an enchanting narrative, journeying from the divine Swayamvara of Mahalakshmi—who emerged during the cosmic churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthana)—to the high-drama climax of the Kishkindha Kanda from the Ramayana with the liberation of Vali (Vali Moksha).
A star-studded lineup and musical feast
Acclaimed Yakshagana exponents travelling from India will join forces with the exceptionally gifted artists of Kannada Sangha Bahrain for an unforgettable cultural showcase:
• Bhagavathike (Lead vocals): Swara Varidhi Kavya Shree Nayak Ajeru
• Himmela (Backing instruments): Savinaya Nellitheertha and Satyajith Rao
• Mummela (Costumed performers): Prominent artistes Shekhar D Shettigar and Ravi Kumar Mundaje, alongside the Sangha’s stellar local troupe, promise an absolute auditory and visual feast.
Decked in resplendent traditional costumes, energised by the resounding pulse of chende and maddale, soul-stirring vocal renditions, and brilliant acting, 'Lakshmi Swayamvara – Vali Moksha' is primed to deliver an authentic, mesmerising experience.
