Kolkata, Sep 30: A young woman was found dead under mysterious circumstances at her in-laws' house in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, with police detaining her husband for questioning, officials said on Wednesday.

The incident took place in the Shalbagan area under Barasat police station limits.

The deceased was identified as Riya Debnath, a resident of Dum Dum in North 24 Parganas. She was working with a private organisation and had married Prosenjit Basu, a resident of Shalbagan, around three months ago. The couple had been living near Taki Road.

According to police, Riya's mother visited her daughter's in-laws' house on Tuesday night after learning about a dispute between the couple. She allegedly found Riya lying dead on a bed with a veil covering her body.

Riya's family alleged that Prosenjit had been physically assaulting her, particularly after consuming alcohol, since their marriage. They also claimed that he had been married twice earlier and that Riya came to know about his previous marriages only later.

Following a complaint from Riya's mother, police detained Prosenjit and began questioning him.

The woman's body was sent to Barasat Hospital on Wednesday for post-mortem examination. However, Riya's mother demanded that the autopsy be conducted at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital instead. She also had an argument with police personnel at the hospital over the issue.

Police have not yet established whether Riya died by suicide or was murdered. Investigators are awaiting the post-mortem report to determine the exact cause of death and take further action.
