Media Release

Belagavi, Oct 2: St Paul’s Institutions, Belagavi, celebrated Gandhi-Shastri Jayanti with reverence and enthusiasm, commemorating the 157th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and the 122nd birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri.

The programme began with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp by the Jesuit management and student representatives. The highlight of the celebration was an inter-religious prayer service centred on the theme 'Truth, Peace, Non-violence and Unity', reflecting the timeless values upheld by the two great leaders.

Scripture readings from the Holy Quran, the Bhagavad Gita and the Holy Bible highlighted the common message of truth, peace, love and harmony shared by different faiths. Tr Janet Paes spoke about the life and contributions of Mahatma Gandhi, while Tr Stella Abranches highlighted Lal Bahadur Shastri’s contributions to nation-building. Gandhi’s favourite bhajan, 'Vaishnava Jana To', was played as the gathering listened in prayerful silence. The participants also pledged to practise truth, non-violence and righteousness in their daily lives.

Addressing the gathering, Fr Alendro D’Costa, SJ, highlighted the lives and values of the two national leaders. He urged everyone to translate their ideals into action, particularly in a world confronted by violence, wars and corruption. He also noted that October 2 is the Feast of the Guardian Angels, reminding everyone of God’s loving guidance and protection.

The celebration concluded with a group photograph of the Jesuit management, staff and student representatives in front of the portraits of Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri, reaffirming the institution’s commitment to peace, unity and responsible citizenship.
