Puttur, Oct 8: Heavy rain accompanied by strong winds continued in Puttur taluk on Wednesday evening, with several parts of the town and rural areas receiving rain for around one-and-a-half hours.
Drizzle began around 4 pm before intensifying into moderate to heavy rain accompanied by thunder in several areas.
The compound wall of Puttur’s newly constructed court complex at Anemajalu near Bannur collapsed during the rain. Cracks reportedly developed in the wall before it suddenly gave way and fell onto the adjoining road.

The compound wall extended up to the premises of a nearby anganwadi centre. The stones and debris that fell onto the road were cleared using a JCB.
The new court complex was inaugurated in January this year. The compound wall was constructed through the Public Works Department, and its collapse within a few months has raised questions over the quality of the construction. Following the incident, some residents reportedly recorded videos alleging that cracks had also developed in portions of the compound wall that remained standing.
Meanwhile, a tree fell on an electricity pole near Jainaraguri in Bannur due to strong winds, bringing down the pole. Power supply was disrupted in Puttur town and several surrounding areas.
Another tree fell across the Puttur-Uppinangady road near Anemajalu Cross. Fire and emergency personnel cleared the fallen tree from the road.
Light rain was also reported in some areas on the night of October 6, with Puttur taluk experiencing continuous rainfall over the past few days.
