Adriano can revive career with Flamengo: Zico

Rio de Janeiro, Apr 2 (IANS): Brazilian football legend Zico has backed clubless striker Adriano to resurrect his troubled career at Flamengo.

"Adriano underwent medical tests by Flamengo doctors in Rio last week, amid reports that the 30-year-old was ready to rejoin his former club," Zico was quoted as saying by Xinhua.

Zico, who scored 52 goals in 72 international matches from 1976 to 1988, said the former Inter Milan and Roma forward deserved another chance after Corinthians cancelled his contract in March.

"As a Flamengo fan I am hoping he can do it. Everybody deserves a second chance in life," Zico told Globoesporte, adding that Adriano was a crucial player.

"I have already said that he is the only player capable of winning the World Cup for Brazil by himself. But I have seen many players who have had difficulties recovering from Achilles ankle problems," said Zico.

Adriano was dismissed by Corinthians after reportedly failing to commit to a strict training schedule designed to reduce his weight.

Zico also had words of support for former FIFA world player of the year Ronaldinho, who has been booed by Flamengo fans in recent matches.

"Flamengo supporters have always been that way. I was also booed at the beginning of my career. The fans want commitment and fight from their players," the former Brazilian soccer star said.

Zico, currently head coach of the Iraqi national team, added he would not run as a candidate in a possible challenge to oust Flamengo president.
