Sullia, Oct 22: Bellare police have arrested a man in connection with the alleged illegal installation of an electric wire near a stream, which led to the electrocution deaths of two youths who had gone fishing at Holekkare in Kalmadka village.

The arrested person has been identified as Ramesh, a resident of Kalleri in Ennoor village, police said.

The incident occurred on the night of October 12 at a stream near a plantation owned by Madhusoodhan Bhat at Holekkare. Bharat, 28, from Kalmadka, and his brother-in-law Ramesh alias Ganesh, 36, from Mungelu Mane in Odilnala village of Belthangady taluk, had gone to catch fish when they came into contact with a live electric wire that had been lowered into the stream along the plantation’s edge. Both died of electrocution.

A minor who was accompanying them also suffered injuries and is undergoing treatment at KVG Hospital in Sullia.

A case had been registered at Bellare police station against plantation owner Madhusoodhan Bhat and Ramesh, who was accused of helping install the illegal electric connection. The two had reportedly gone into hiding following the incident.

Police said Ramesh has now been arrested, while the main accused, Madhusoodhan Bhat, remains absconding.
