Maharashtra minister stays FDA action against methanol firm

Daijiworld Media Network - Pune

Pune, Nov 2: Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Minister Narhari Zirwal has reportedly stayed the action initiated by FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe against a methanol manufacturing company in the Ranjangaon area of Pune district, triggering questions over the reasons behind the decision.

The FDA had taken action against the company following the toxic liquor tragedy in Pune, in which several people reportedly lost their lives. The action was initiated under Mundhe's leadership as part of efforts to prevent the misuse of methanol and curb the sale of adulterated food and other products.

However, Minister Zirwal subsequently ordered a stay on the action, raising concerns over possible interference in the department's enforcement measures.

Allegations have surfaced that the company is linked to a leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and that political pressure may have influenced the minister's decision. However, these claims have not been independently established.

Mundhe has been in the spotlight for his strict approach since taking charge of the FDA. His department has intensified inspections and action against companies and establishments following complaints, irrespective of their size or influence.

His enforcement drive has reportedly earned appreciation from members of the public, particularly for steps taken to curb food adulteration. The action has also reportedly brought greater scrutiny to the use of artificial colours in food products, including jaggery and jalebis.

There had also been speculation that Mundhe would be transferred from the FDA to Rajasthan. However, he dismissed the reports, stating that he could not be transferred outside Maharashtra.

According to figures cited in reports, complaints received by the FDA have increased by 557 per cent since Mundhe took charge. The rise has been attributed to increased public awareness and the department's intensified enforcement efforts.

The stay on the action against the Ranjangaon company has now raised questions about the circumstances surrounding the minister's intervention and the future course of the FDA's proceedings.
