7 Killed, 20 Injured in Assam Road Mishaps


Guwahati, Apr 16 (IANS): At least seven people, among them a woman, were killed and over 20 injured in three road mishaps in different parts of the state Monday morning, police said.

According to police, four people were charred to death while 15 others received serious injuries when a night service bus caught fire after hitting a truck-trailer in Basagaon area near the Kaziranga National Park in Upper Assam's Golaghat district.

"The night super vehicle was coming from Tinsukia to Tezpur and hit a trailer vehicle (the vehicle used for carrying small vehicles) near the Kaziranga around 4.15 a.m.," a police official said, adding that while four of the passengers were charred to death, 13 others received serious injuries.

"The injured were rushed to Bhakhat Civil Hospital immediately. The night super vehicle was damaged due to the fire," said the officer.

The condition of some of the injured was stated to be serious, he added.

In the second incident in central Assam's Nagaon district, a fire brigade vehicle and a truck collided head-on Monday morning.

A fire fighter named Amritjyoti Hira died on the spot while four others were seriously injured. Hira was going in the fire brigade vehicle, police said.

In Sonitpur district, the driver of a Maruti Swift car lost control over the vehicle which overturned in Tokoubari area of Gohpur around 4 a.m. Monday.

"One couple, identified as Rup Kishore Hazarika and Rashmi Hazarika, who were travelling in the vehicle, died on the spot," a police official said.
