Fog Halts 700 Cargo Ships in China

Beijing, May 1 (IANS): Over 700 cargo ships have been stranded on a section of the Yangtze river in China's Hubei province due to heavy fog, shrouding the region for two days.

The ships have been halted near the Three Gorges Dam, the world's largest hydropower project.

According to the Three Gorges Dam Navigation Bureau, the fog started to engulf the area Saturday noon and the visibility once reduced to less than 50 metres, which has led to a halt to traffic for over 40 hours on the Three Gorges Dam river section, Xinhua reported.

As of Monday noon, over 700 ships had been stranded and the fog showed no signs of dissipating, it stated.
