Bomber Held in Georgia

Tbilisi, May 5 (IANS/RIA Novosti): A man has been arrested in Georgia for allegedly planting an explosive device near the prosecutor's office in the western city of Zugdidi.

"The suspect was detained near the district prosecutor's office in Zugdidi where the explosive device was planted," said Interior Ministry chief of staff Shota Khizanishvil.

The official said the suspect brought the device from the nearby breakaway republic of Abkhazia.

According to BBC, Abkhazia declared independence from Georgia in 1999 but Georgia continues to regard it as a breakaway region.

Situated in the northwestern corner of Georgia with the Black Sea to the south-west and the Caucasus mountains and Russia to the north-east, Abkhazia was once a prime holiday destination for the Soviet elite.
