Mangalore: RTE Vigilance and Monitoring Committee to Hold ‘Jatha’ Across District

Mangalore, May 18:
“The Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act or Right to Education (RTE) Act which ought to be implemented in all private schools will be monitored by the Right to Education vigilance and monitoring committee, D K district, in the district,” said Rennie D’Souza, convener of the committee, addressing a press meet on Thursday May 17.
 
He said that though as per the act, all the private schools are required to enroll children from weaker sections and disadvantaged communities to the extent of 25 percent of their intake by simple random selection, there exists doubts with regard to the implementation, hence the committee will hold ‘Savithri Bai Pule’ RTE Act awareness ‘Jatha’ starting from Wednesday May 23, from Mangalore. “The private school which comes forward to host the inaugural ceremony will be appreciated,” he said.

The Jatha will pass through Bantwal on Thursday May 24, Belthangady on Friday May 25, Puttur on Saturday May 26, and Sullia on Monday May 28.
 
D’Souza also said that during the Jatha, a handbill will be distributed and educational institutions heads and education department officials will be appealed to so as to ensure implementation of the Act. Also, any cases of violation of the Act by any schools will be taken up by the committee.
 
Lolaksha, social activist, said that the committee has observed that some private schools went head with the admissions cornering the provisions in the Act and such admissions should be nullified.
 
He called upon all the people’s representatives and MLAs to take initiatives in this Jatha.
 
Office-bearers of the committee Ashok Bhat, Narayan K, Kairunisa, Usha Nayak, Umesh Nirmal, Achuta Gatty, Savitha Nirmal, and Yusuf Waktar were present.
