Chopper Crashes at Siachen, Pilot Killed

New Delhi, May 23 (IANS): An Indian Army helicopter crashed Wednesday at the Siachen glacier, the world's highest battlefield, killing the pilot, army sources said.

The chopper, from the army's aviation wing, was on a regular sortie when it went down at around 11.30 a.m.

In New Delhi, the army headquarters said the helicopter was on a routine mission to supply goods to troops posted on the glacier along the India-Pakistan border.

The pilots tried to land at the Bhim helipad when they lost control of the flying machine. It crashed 400 metres short of the helipad, an officer here said.

"The pilot was killed and the co-pilot was badly injured," the officer said.
