SAI Transfers Officials After Wrestlers Served Rotten Fruits

New Delhi, Jun 18 (PTI): The Sports Authority of India (SAI) has transfered two officials and is also set to cancel the license of a food supplier after an inquiry into a report revealed that rotten fruits were being served to Indian wrestlers at an Olympic training camp in Sonepat.

The SAI has found out that rotten fruits were being stored in a dirty kitchen in Sonepat, 45 kilometres of New Delhi, where the wrestlers are training ahead of next month's London Games.

"When we inquired into the matter, it was found out that there is some problem with the food contractor. I have instructed the concerned officials to take action against him and if requires cancel his food license," SAI Director General Desh Deepak Verma told PTI.
"SAI, further inquiring into the issue, has removed two officials from their positions after they failed to perform their duties properly. Both were posted at the Sonepat centre," he added.

A member of the sports ministry's monitoring panel had visited the camp last month and reported that rotten fruits had been used to make juice under unhygienic conditions in the kitchen.

Among the wrestlers training at the camp was Beijing Games bronze medallist Sushil Kumar, who is also a medal prospect at the London Games.
