Bangalore, Jun 23: An one-day session of the Karnataka Legislative Council will be convened on June 28 for the specific purpose of holding the election to the post of the chairman of the upper house. The house will meet at 11 am.

The outgoing chairman D H Shankaramurthy, who go re-elected to the Legislative Council in the recent election to the upper house from the South-West Graduates Constituency, is likely to be the ruling BJP candidate and might probably be elected unopposed.

Shankaramurthy had resigned his post before entering the fray in the recent elections held on June 10, though his term as chairman was supposed to end on June 21.

Senior –most member of the house from the opposition Congress party has been appoined as the pro-tem chairman to conduct the proceedings and election of the new chairman.

The decision to convene the one-day session of the Council was taken at the State Cabinet meeting held on Saturday.

Medical Education Minister S A Ramadas, who briefed reporters after the cabinet meeting, said as per rules of the House, the election to the chairman’s post should be conducted at the earliest.

Rajasekharan will chair the session and conduct elections to the post of the Chairperson.
The Deputy Chairperson of the Council will be elected on the first-day of the next session of the Council to be held on July, the Minister said.

Ramdas said many ministers did not attend as the notice to convene the session has been issued at a short notice.

Meanwhile, Pro-tem chairman Rajashekaran administered the oath to the newly elected members on Saturday. The members who took the oath are: Y A Narayanaswamy from South-East Teachers' Constituency, D H Shankaramurthy from South-West Graduates constituency and Captain Ganesh Karnik from South-West Teachers constituency Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda, MLCs Veeranna Mathikatti (Congress) and B J Puttaswamy (BJP) were also present.
