PM, Sonia Visit Assam to Assess Flood Situation


Guwahati, Jul 2 (IANS): Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi Monday arrived at the Rowriah airport at Jorhat in upper Assam to assess the flood situation here, officials said.

They landed at 11.10 a.m.

The prime minister and the Congress chief were recieved by Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Bhubneswar Kalita and some other senior Congress leaders of Assam.

The VVIPs left the airport in three Indian Air Force (IAF) helicopters to visit the flood affected areas of upper Assam districts, including Majuli river Island and Kaziranga National Park.

The prime minister and the Congress chief are scheduled to make about an hour-long aerial visit to the flood affected areas.

They will reach Guwahati around 1 p.m., where the prime minister will meet some senior bureaucrats of the Assam government.
