PM, Sonia visit flood-hit Assam


Guwahati, July 2 (IBNS): Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress supremo Sonia Gandhi on Monday visited Assam and conducted an aerial survey of the flood-affected regions in the state.

Singh and Gandhi were accompanied by Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi.

According to reports, Singh, Gandhi and Gogoi made an aerial survey of Sibsagar, Jorhat, Lakhimpur and Dhemaji districts.

Singh and Gandhi arrived in Jorhat from New Delhi by a special flight at around 11 am on Monday.

The leaders are likely to visit Guwahati later in the day and discuss the current situation of the flood-hit state with ministers and other senior government officials.

They are scheduled to leave for the national capital on Monday afternoon.

At least 66 people have been killed by the flood in the east Indian state.

 At least 16 deaths from landslides were reported from the North Cachar Hills district and Guwahati.

Nearly two million people are affected by the flood.

Heavy rains in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh have resulted in overflow of Brahmaputra River and its tributaries leading to floods in areas astride them.

The Army said on Sunday it is assisting in Flood Relief Operations in all affected areas of the two states.

Reacting swiftly, Army has deployed 122 teams in flood affected areas for rescue and relief operations in Assam's Sonitpur, Kamrup, Barpeta, Tinsukia, Sibsagar Jorhat, Dhemaji, Baksa, Nalbari and Darrang districts. Army operations also on in Changlang in Arunachal Pradesh.

The Army has rescued at least 3500 people and provided medical aid to many.

In addition, approximately 3000 kgs of rations provided by civil administration have been distributed by Army Task Forces in the isolated and inundated areas.

Army helicopters are being employed for aerial reconnaissance of flood affected areas and distribution of food and rations.
