Nearly 200 Dead in Nepal Accidents this Year

Kathmandu, Jul 15 (IANS): At least 190 people have been killed and 629 injured in 68 reported highway accidents in Nepal this year, according to Xinhua.

Traffic police said more than 15 of the dead were minors. In 2011, as many as 2,527 people died in similar accidents.

Many of the accidents were caused by overtaking buses, speeding vehicles, collision of buses and vehicles skidding off the road and plunging many feet over the roadside.

As many as 10 deaths this year were caused by vehicles hitting pedestrians.

While two accidents were caused by brake failure, carelessness was the prime reason for many accidents. Unskilled and often drunken drivers also caused such crashes, police said.
