BCCI Grants Amnesty to Kapil Dev, Foes Become Friends Again

Mumbai, Jul 25 (NDTV): The long standing animosity between former India captain Kapil Dev and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) seems to have come to an end as the two parties met today in Mumbai to bury the hatchet.

BCCI President N Srinivasan also received a letter from Kapil Dev who informed that he had resigned from the Essel Sports Private Limited, the company that owned the rebel league - Indian Cricket League. Consequently he has been granted amnesty.

"Mr. Kapil Dev has informed the Board that he has resigned from the Essel Sports Private Limited / ICL. He has also stated in the letter that he has always supported the BCCI, and will continue to do so in the future," Srinivasan said in his press statement.

The BCCI has also received the olive branch graciously. "The BCCI acknowledges Mr. Kapil Dev's immense contribution to Indian cricket and looks forward to a fruitful association with him in the years to come," Srinivasan said.

After the meeting with the BCCI President, Kapil said, "BCCI is the parent body and we should respect it."

He also added that he has not been given any responsibility as of now and it will up to the Board to decide it. "We have cleared all misunderstandings," he said.

Kapil, who joined as the chairman of the executive board of Indian Cricket League back in 2007, had never sought amnesty from the BCCI but he was invited for some of the functions organised by Cricket Board lately.

Now that he has received amnesty, he will be entitled to Rs. 1 crore as a part of BCCI's one-time benefit scheme and he will also start receiving pension once again. His arrears will also be cleared.

    It was at the Sardar Patel Gujarat Stadium at Motera in Ahmedabad that Kapil Dev went past Richard Hadlee's record of 431 Test wickets and to add even Sunil Gavaskar reached the landmark of 10,000 Test runs in the same stadium.

    It was in 1983 India celebrating victory in world cup cricket lead by Kapil Dev during that time Maruti 800 launched.

    Kapil Dev was indeed one of the greatest cricketers that India has produced and one of the best all-rounders of all times. But he isn't a saint. Whatever may be the explanation, I'm convinced that Kapil did not join hands with ICL to promote cricket and youngsters but only for few additional bucks since ICL offered instant money then. A player who played for country and brought world cup should not have run behind money. When ICL was born it was purely the tussle between the BCCI and Zee group. Kapil joined the latter just because it offered great bucks. Irrespective of his records, commitment, there is no doubt that he should be ever thankful to BCCI for having allowed him to break Hadly's record. In his 16 years’ of career, he was made to play only to break Headly’s record of most wickets. Kapil got retired in March 1994 and he got his last 5 wicket haul 2 years before retiring i/e in 1992. In his last 10 innings before retiring, Kapil was able to take only 11 wickets. In his last 105 innings as a batsman, he was not even able to score a single half century. Moreover, he was not even able to take more than 3 wickets in an inning in his last 50 innings as a bowler. ICL was never interested in promoting cricket and it never had the capacity since BCCI is India's official cricket board recognized by ICC. Kapil should be blamed for having spoiled the careers of some of finest young talents from India such Ritinder Sodhi, Ambati Raydu, Alfred Absolom etc who joined ICL. Kapil was a total failure as a coach and perhaps wanted to hide his failures. If he is a man of principles what he claims to be, he should not have sought amnesty from BCCI. Irrespective of the way BCCI functions, no one can deny that the way BCCI pays the players both during their national duty and after their retirement is much better than any sports body. Now Kapil has come back because he knows IPL has much more bucks than ICL. Amnesty, commitment to country, promoting cricket is just hogwash!

    Kapil Dev is one of the finest person Indian Cricket and BCCI had.
    He is the Father figure of todays world of Cricket. He deserves to be reinstated with dignity and responsibility. He will no doubt restore pride of BCCI in the face of severe criticism.

    Who is BCCI to grant amnesty to Kapil Dev? Kapil Dev deserves much more than that. He is the living legend who really played for country. Today's cricketer's need to learn a lot from Kapil Dev. Kapil is golden cricketer of India. BCCI should have honoured Kapil. BCCI should be dissolved and former cricketer's headed by Kapil Dev should be office bearers of BCCI. We don't need Sharad Pawar, Srinivasan as BCCI chief. If we need to groom cricket, we need people like Kapil, Mohinder Amarnath, Madan Lal, Kirmani and GR Vishwanath at the helm of BCCI.

    BCCI, should have done this thing to Mr. Kapil Dev, long before.
    BCCI is Making money in IPL, The Originally IDEA from Mr. Kapil, whatever he did in ICL that only interest of Indian Cricket, but after BCCI did all banning cricketers from India and asking other country's cricketing body to ban their cricketers who in joined ICL and begun with their own IPL is only interest of MONEY and only MONEY no Interest in CRICKET.
