London, Jul 28 (IANS): British cyclist Bradley Wiggins, the Tour de France champion, rang a huge bell at the Olympic Park to mark the beginning of the opening ceremony of the 2012 London Games here Friday.
Dressed in the iconic yellow T-shirt, given to the winner of the Tour de France, Wiggins, a six-time Olympic medallist, sent the crowd into raptures as he walked up to the stage to ring the bell.
What followed next was a whistle-stop montage of everyday life in the British Isles, running from cricket greens to scurrying geese to the London Eye and to the sneering snippet of John Lydon singing "God Save the Queen".
