Olympian Archer Honoured in Nagaland

Kohima, Aug 16 (IANS): Chekrovolu Swuro, the archer from Nagaland who took part in the London Olympics, has been honoured with the first T. Ao State Sports Award.

The award was also given to sports administrator Lanu Toy and Greenwood School.

Nagaland Governor Nikhil Kumar conferred the awards at a ceremony here Wednesday.

T. Ao was instituted after the Naga People's Front government reviewed the Nagaland Sports Policy in 2006 to recognise excellence in sports.

Ao was the first Naga Olympian and independent India's first captain and led the national football team in the 1948 Olympic Games in London.

Applauding Chekrovolu, the governor termed it a breakthrough for her to have become an Olympian.

Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, who was present at the ceremony, told Chekrovolu not to be disappointed with the results at the London Olympics.
