I am Happy With Rising Prices: Beni Prasad Verma

Barabanki(UP)/New Delhi, Aug 20 (PTI): Union minister Beni Prasad Verma was today at the centre of a controversy with remarks that he was "happy" over rising prices of food items as it will benefit farmers, evoking a sharp attack from BJP and other parties.

"Dal, atta, rice and vegetables have become expensive. The more the prices, the better it is for farmers. I am happy with this inflation," the Union Steel Minister told reporters on the sidelines of a function here.

He said the media was making a hue and cry of increasing prices. "Media kehti hai ki khane ki thali mehngi ho gayi hai...Isse fayada kisano ka hai, aur sarkar kisano ke fayda ki pachdhar hai" (Media says that cost of food plate has increased but it is benefiting farmers...and the government is in favour of farmers profit)," he said.

Lashing out at his rationale, BJP accused the Congress of turning a blind eye to the common man being hit by inflation.
"The Congress leaders are not affected by inflation at all. They are not seeing the plight of the people as a result of rising prices. It clearly shows their mentality," BJP leader Shahnawaz Hussain said in Delhi.

Today, the farmers are hit by high cost of fertilisers and power. "Then how are they going to benefit by rising prices," he said.
"The Congress talks about aam aadmi but it has drifted a long way away from them," he said.
Attacking Verma, SP leader Mohan Singh said the minister is not fit to continue in the Government, which has got the full support of the Samajwadi Party.

"His remarks on price rise are highly irresponsible. It clearly shows that he is not in touch with ground realities. The farmers are not getting remunerative prices, be it for vegetables or other products," Singh said.

Shivanand Tiwari of JD(U) said instead of finding ways to effectively tackle inflation, corruption, poverty and unemployment, the senior minister was justifying rising prices.

I think that this crazy should not even be in Parliament, leave alone being a Minister. He himself is over the retirement age for all those who have worked their butts off for 40 years and he says "inflation" is good. These so called parliamentarians give themselves hikes every so often little realising that the retired people are not just finding it difficult but are really struggling.I am a retired person in my 70's so I know what I am talking about.
Sonia Gandhi are you listening to the crap being dished out by your Ministers.

Irresponsible statement! I feel Ministers are loosing pulse of the people. First check earning/spending capacity of vast majority of people and then issue such statement. Governments should always ensure basic needs of the people like food, cloth, Medicine, fuel, Basic education, protection and shelter is not out of the reach of people even at the cost of subsidies.

To my openion, Neither Politicians nor Leaders knows the reason for raising price. The farmar only knows why the prices are heigh, beacuse all agricultural lands are converted to commertiacl lands, Agricultural materials like manure, pestisides, seeds, equipments, are sold to high price, due to scarecity of rain , farmers face loss, there is no subsidy or any help from Govt for samll farmers.

I think before talking to media he has to think twice. As a Union minister he should not give such a stupid statement. First of all let him learn what is inflation and how it will effect the end users. He has learn the basic defination of Economics. Many times he opens his mouth unncessary to show his presence in the government. Keep some qualified Ministers instead useless ministers like Benni Prasad. It will not only spoil the image of the government but also the Congress Party. Madam Sonia has to immediate disqualify him from the government as well as from the primary membership of congress party.
