Coal was Not Sold, So Nobody Benefited: Sibal

New Delhi, August 30 (PTI): The government on Wednesday said there was no question of anyone benefiting from coal block allocation as the mineral were never sold and accused the BJP of raking up the issue for no reason because of its desperation to come to power at the Centre before 2014.

Telecom and HRD minister Kapil Sibal also rejected Opposition demand for cancellation of the licences for coal block allocation, saying such a step would cause huge monetary loss and badly affect the country's power sector.

"Under the nationalisation policy, coal cannot be sold... Coal from the blocks allotted was never sold. So, who could have benefitted," he asked while addressing a press conference at the Congress headquarters.

"Why is there so much of noise? Did anyone sell the coal," he asked.

He accused the BJP of not bothering about the country's interest and said it was thinking only how to come to power before 2014, when the Lok Sabha elections are due.

Slamming BJP for its tacticts of disrupting Parliament, Sibal alleged that the "ideology" used to assassinate Mahatma Gandhi is being used now to "kill" Indian democracy.

"The BJP does not think about the nation. It wants to come to power before 2014. It just believes in the ideology of disruption and killing of democracy," the HRD minister said.

On demands that the controversial coal block allocations should be cancelled, he said, "We cannot cancel the licences. It will be lead to wastage of crores of ruppees. Many banks are involved and the decision will affect the power sector badly."

I think he is sick. We all should send " Get well soon" card to him.
When CAG has clearly said that government lost 1.38 lac crores due to wrong coal mining allocation, what Sibbu says is utter nonsense. It is pity that we have ministers like this.

He is one of the biggest agent of corruption.

When AA Raja made crores of loss to exchequer, this Kapil told the country... it is zero loss. When coal blocks were allocated and country lost Rs.1.38lakh crore, Chidambaram told ' Zero loss' Is there any one else who is so addicted in UPA say.. congress to this 'Zero' addiction. PC was insisting that the 'allocation' has not been used and not a single ton of Coal has been dug out. What an idea sirjee..

Like Arun Jatley rightly said... if an amount of Rs1.38 Lakh crore is transferred to "A" account to "B" account, even if "B" has not used it, it is a loss to "A". Then how can he say.. 'Zero'

Coal has been not sold. But rights on Coal Blocks already had given to private companies by Government. Now Government not having any right on that. Private Companies not sold that coal because, they knew that future price of coal is much higher than the present price. They are getting book profit though they are not selling. This is like keeping gold at home. Though you are not selling now, you are getting profit out of that on increased price. Why these ministers not understanding such simple logic behind not selling coal.

If the readers remember, Kapil Sibal came to prominence (in 1992) when he argued in favour of justice Ramaswamy of Punjab high court against who impeachment motion for corruption was being discussed in the parliament. Sibal put forward a simple logic that parliament is wasting much more money in debating the issue than the corruption money at stake - and was able to convince the MPs.
So defending corruption using his legal brain is in his blood and that is why he is in congress. That does not mean that corruption has not happened.
