Hike in petrol, diesel prices likely after Friday

New Delhi, Sep 4 (PTI) : An increase in petrol, diesel, domestic cooking gas (LPG) and kerosene prices looks "imminent" after the Finance Ministry said it has no money to provide for fuel subsidy.

"This (hike) is imminent. There is no question of holding back now," a top oil ministry official said today.

In all possibility, prices may be increased after the current monsoon session of Parliament ends on Friday.

Diesel, domestic LPG and PDS kerosene rates have not been changed since June 2011 even though cost of production has soared 28 per cent. State-owned fuel retailers are losing Rs 560 crore per day on sale of diesel and cooking fuel, and are forced to resort to short-term borrowings to meet funds needed for importing crude oil (raw material).

Borrowings of the three fuel retailers have shot up to Rs 1,57,617 crore at end of June from Rs 1,28,272 crore as on March 31.

Besides, they are losing close to Rs 5 per litre on petrol, a fuel that was decontrolled in June 2010 but rates of which haven't moved in tandem with cost.

"Finance Ministry says it is not left with funds to subsidise oil companies. Oil companies are jewels of India. They need to be saved at all cost. Governments come and go, but oil companies will be required to fuel the country," the official said.

Diesel is being sold at a loss of Rs 19.26 a litre, kerosene at Rs 34.34 per litre and domestic LPG at Rs 347 per 14.2-kg cylinder.

At current rate, the three firms are projected to lose Rs 1,92,951 crore in revenues in the financial year ending March 31, 2012.

Exactly, there will be a day when we get back to our roots i.e. back on our feet when nobody can afford this precious commodity.

Everybody will be happy including the govt (with a big sigh of relief).

In the interim, if every citizen stop using this commodity for 1 month all politicians will die an instant death. Because the billions of litres of petrol consumed each day multiply by Re. 10/- as kitty to the Govt, it will not only wipe out the TREASURY but treachery by the govt. with it's citizens!

Fuel pricing is a tragic issue in India. Subsidy is gobbling the Govt revenue. Subsidised diesel used for Diesel Cars by the Rich. India no longer can afford this inequity.

They increase petrol prices by 5-7rs and reduce it to 1rs later. After all why so many taxes for fuel ? Remove all those taxes.

Govt make money in this taxes itself and do lots of scam. If govt is looting public money, than why we should pay tax ? Why cant public stop paying tax??

If both state and central govt remove or reduce taxes and duties Petrol prices can come down..But they wont because All ministers and MLAs, MPS get free petrol..They dont even pay electricity bills.Because of .Financial mess made by Central government, i wonder US$ will come back to RS 42/=. It is not US$ become stronger , Indian Rs become weaker thanks to Congress and the mess it created..Billions of $ taken back by foreign investors...

The true reason behind petrol hike is not the goverment guys..it is the exchange rate..indian rupee value has decreased with US dollar..so india has to pay more money in order to buy petrol from Iran...this is the real truth ....u cannot blame govt for this....

Let them raise diesel and petrol price without considering subsidy by Government, but same time Central and State Governments should also consider reducing the various tax percentage too. Any price rise will lead to high inflation and people will have to pay heavy price for even vegetables too. But it’s very surprising to see that Central Ministry do not have money to pay subsidy but another side they already lost an opportunity to make 1.80 Lakh Crores of rupees by their mismanagement in Coal Ministry!!!!!! 1.76 Lakh Crores of rupees by malpractice in 2G scam!!!!!!!! Had our Government run by better Political Party with wise & active Prime Minister and Cabinet Ministers we would have got the Diesel and Petrol cheaper than GCC Countries

Increase all the petroleum product rates so high that nobody can use them!
Bring all petro fuel rates at par say Rs 100/ltr, to enable only wealthy & government vehicles to move on roads.
By doing that we can go back to the era when horse, ox, bullock & animal driven vehicles were there, when gold & diamonds were sold at roadsides!
The solution lies in switching to eco-friendly technologies like bio-fuel for all diesel vehicles, electric driven other private vehicles, efficient public transport systems etc.
As long as petroleum companies monopolise production & distribution not letting us know the real cost of production & distribution they can make hay by cheating us.
I urge government to give license just like u had allotted first come first serve on many occassions to big industrialists & politically influencial persons, to us as well to import & market petro products freely.
By this way we can break the monopoly of Ambanis & few Navrathan comapnies who never are in the RED as claimed by our governments due to any fictitious loss they enforce on us.
