US Daily Calls Manmohan Singh a 'tragic figure'

WASHINGTON, Sep 5 (IANS) : Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has been described as "a dithering, ineffectual bureaucrat presiding over a deeply corrupt government" by a leading US daily.

In an article "India's 'silent' prime minister becomes a tragic figure", the Washington Post said Manmohan Singh helped set India on the path to modernity, prosperity and power, but critics say the shy, soft-spoken 79-year-old is in "danger of going down in history as a failure".

"The architect of India's economic reforms, Singh was a major force behind his country's rapprochement with the United States and is a respected figure on the world stage.

"But the image of the scrupulously honorable, humble and intellectual technocrat has slowly given way to a completely different one: a dithering, ineffectual bureaucrat presiding over a deeply corrupt government," it said.

The daily said that for the past two weeks everyday, the Indian parliament has been adjourned as the opposition demands Singh's resignation over allegations of waste and corruption in the allocation of coal-mining concessions.

"The story of Singh's dramatic fall from grace in his second term in office and the slow but steady tarnishing of his reputation has played out in parallel with his country's decline on his watch.

"As India's economy has slowed and as its reputation for rampant corruption has reasserted itself, the idea that the country was on an inexorable road to becoming a global power has increasingly come into question," said the daily.

Our PM is a great economist. He is also honest. However he is surrounded by filthy rogues in different colors, creeds and parties. He was never meant for the prime ministers chair, but it is too late for him to withdraw and yield to the thieves who are waiting for the chair. He cannot swim against the current, and refuses to drown due to his noble upbringing. God help him and God help India.

In India many people are ready to accept anything as long as it comes from Cong or BJP irrespective of their bad deeds. People do justify these acts instead of condemning. Probably India would have progressed more if people were more rational. Even today Cong and Bjp are being supported by millions inspite of their acts just they belong to such parties !! Bihar and Orissa did benefit as people dumped corrupt Lallu and congress. That was difficult decision to dump Lallu but they finally dumped him .a A serious thought is needed to dump congress and BJp in centre and bring new option . One Option could be Nitish Kumar Of JD(U) and Patnaik of Orissa take the initiatives . We cannot be negative and must explore this sooner the better. Time has come for a change and dump the corruption.

Public opinion is a chamelion that changes color from situation to situation. Indians would love to bad mouth their prime minister in the local media, but when a US news paper does it, they will all band against that news paper and call American media is corrupt. Same thing happened when Time magazine called Manmohan singh an under achiever.

Wherever they send their army for peace has become a never ending battlefield. We have seen this in Afghanistan, Iraq etc. America is silent for the persecutions of Christians in Egypt, Pakistan and Nigeria where they send aid. A double stranded nation with a double stranded leader who’s past is unknown and fishy unlike the well-educated MMS. We salute you MMS, Singh is King.

In any case BJP cannot dream advantage out of it as its not a viable substitute to UPA. BJP has communal people who are dangerous to country . We cannot vote for BJP at all. Its the duty of Indian citizens to find a suitable party for ruling India as both congress and BJP are not suitable.
As far as Karnataka BJP is corrupt and to be kept out. Congress has miserably failed in protesting corruption of BJP and eually bad. In fact congress has indirectly protected BJP with no leadership at all. So both are equally to be kept out. We have JD(S) which is better than other two and has Kumaraswamy as leader. JD(S) should come back to power soon as its track record in past is much better.Choice is in our hands

Manmohan Singh is the architect of present India. When he was inducted into the ministry by the then PM, Narasim Rao to uplift the Indian economy which was almost bankrupt, he was not at all a politician. Singh completely changed the scenario of India within a few years since he took over. Yes he is a silent PM but not a dirty and crook politician like 99% of our politicians today. His actions speak louder than his silence. I don’t think without Manmohan Singh either Congress or BJP would have achieved what we have achieved in the past two decades.

The news-report in the Washington Post should not be taken seriously as it is the view of the paper and not the US government. Instead of seeking apology from the Washington Post, the Indian Govt. should handle the Opposition Parties who are trying to create havoc. BJP, who is out to suck the PM’s blood is more corrupt than the Congress. Take only Karnataka and see the wealth amassed by the Reddies and Yeddies. We have read in news how many crores these Reddies were bribing to get bail. A few years ago Janardhana Reddy, who is now in a jail in Andhra Pradesh had offered 45 crore worth diamond-studded crown to a temple. The crown is worth at least three times more at prevailing price of gold. If it is not a bribe to the god, what do you call it? If one is chor, the other one is maha-chor.

And the US is now talking of a country that has shown over 6% growth with its financial sector intact, while the US is in recession and its financial sector bankrupt.

I would think right now India is in better shape than the US. US has no business pointing fingers at anyone else.

Mr. manmohan singh, Indias prime minister is indeed silent on various matters affecting our nation. While I do not endorse a foreign daly's opinion, I am quite sure many will agree that manmahan singh has withered away as an effective prime minister for a nation of the size of ours.

Brilliant minds often speak less but speaking less and not taking a position should not be the virtue of a prime minister.

He is leading a government in a minority situation and hence is he playing safe?

Our country has become famous for open corruption just like open toilets around the nation. What we need a robust prime minister who should move the nation to a nation that should be envied.

Having degrees and intellect alone does not make good prime minister.

What we need is a strong and out spoken Prime minister of action on issues plaguing the nation starting from massive and deep rooted corruption of politicians and citizenry. and the list goes on and on...

They haven't wisely thought in advance that the world will change so fast. Every country will sustain their own. Their main problem is that they don't go in detail but think superficially. Corruption persists in every country,it cannot be eradicated for ever, either the money in over the table or under the table.US is following over the table strategy in financing for the election where as India follows under the table stataergy. Our opposition if they win, they will also follow the same thing. So whom to blame finally ?

Am really surprised by the kind of support MMS is getting in this forum.Lets try to understand the logic behind the US daily bashing of MMS & UPA.
a)India along with China are considered as the economic powerhouse with an annual GDP growth of over 9%. China has maintained the same phase but india has slipped quite drastically with an forecasted growth of around 5.4% which is a huge slowdown.
    b) The credit rating agency has slashed india rating thus making it costlier to borrow money.
    c) Foreign direct investment(FDI) has died down quite drastically as investors start loosing confidence in the India story as there is a policy paralyzis.
d)Some of the largest scams have been unearthed which has shook the confidence of the foreign investors. 2G scam made investors to retreat from india as Investors invested heavily on the telephone infrastructure but only to loose the license as supreme court struck down the spectrum allocation.
    e) Coal scam happened right under the nose of MMS wherein govt alloted coal blocks free of cost to some & at a very nominal price to others caused an 1.8Lakh crore loss to the excheqer.
f)Unable to bring the FDI in retail sector has further derailed the much needed capital to the retail sector.
    g) Our defence deals are either delayed for indefinte period or scams been unearthed like the TETRA where we premeium price for inferior quality thus compromising on the national security.
g)Throuhought the last 8 years MMS has not shown any sign of urgency in reforms.
Considering the above points Washington post has rightly called him as tragic figure. UPA has dashed the hopes of millions of poor people by its economic policy. The kind of leadership we have at the centre is demoralising to say the least & he should step down at the earliest.

Just by calling him a 'tragic figure' he does not become one.

The US media should realise that their past and present presidents are the real 'tragic figures'. They are the ones who started the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and are now finding it very difficult to withdraw their forces from those countries.

I would be the happiest if our Indian papers printed the heading in the papers as 'The most powerful PERSON on earth (US) has a TRAGIC FIGURE

1)Everything from the west is not bad.Where would we be without electricity,tv,telephone, paper etc..all from the west. The very reason we are able to communicate in this forum is because of the west.Having said that everything from the west is not good...offcourse.We even speak the western language and dress like them.
2)INDIA is a world leader now.so what happens here will damage not only us but impact us in business, tourism, investment etc.so then it becomes a concern for outsiders too.We want them to come and invest in india,we cannot be socialist all the time.
3)We should have zero tolerance to corruption..low and high..BJP or CONGRESS..they are all the same..
4)WE may be ridiculed by the west for various reasons...just like we do the same to them..but the fact of the matter is majority appreciate our culture, tradition, social structure, respect for elders, our multicultural society and even democracy..

So it is time we build this nation free of corruption and quit blaming others and quit whining..in plain PUT UP OR SHUT UP .

Rakesh, I don't agree with you. BJP is also equally corrupt as Congress. Best example is Karnataka BJP. Reddy brothers treated Sushma Swaraj as their mother but when Janardhan Reddy goes to jail, Reddy became Sushma's step son. BJP was also soft on terrorists. One of the prominent BJP minister accompanied the dreaded terrorists to Kandhahar for their safe passage at the instructions of great Shakuni L.K. Advani. It's due to the bad deeds of this Shakuni he never been able to become PM of India. Don't blindly support BJP. Why are other nations i.e. US interfering in Indian affairs? It is only an attack on PM's personality because of his good ties with IRAN. I think now Ram Gopal Verma will make a movie 'Meri kamoshi' on our Prime Minister MMS.
