How Cartoonist Aseem Trivedi Turned National Hero Overnight

Special Correspondent

“First they ignore you...
then they laugh at you...
then they fight you...
and then you win”.

This quote of Mahatma Gandhi is the favourite quotation of Aseem Trivedi 25, the cartoonist who has become a celebrity hero overnight following his recent arrest, if one goes through his profile in Facebook. This quote can be certainly attributed to him as Trivedi has won hands down and must be having the last laugh having become a national hero, courtesy overreaction by the government by sending him to jail on charges of sedition for uploading derogatory cartoons on his web portal.

Naturally, one is tempted to ask why the government acted so imprudently making a hero out of someone like Trivedi especially at a time when the issue of freedom of speech and reasonable restriction is going on in the Supreme Court. The votaries of freedom of free speech and expression have charged the government of resorting to witch-hunt to browbeat crusaders of corruption and sought his unconditional release. Needless to say Trivedi has walked out of Arthur Jail of Mumbai to a hero’s welcome, his head held high. Apparently, the government developed cold feet following public outcry, condemnation by media and other political parties and by the strong stand taken by Trivedi himself and released him.

Trivedi an activist of India against Corruption (IAC) who was picked up by Mumbai Police last Saturday following a non-bailable warrant against him for sedition, was freed yesterday from jail (12th September) but not before raising many unpalatable questions including a debate on the call for repeal of IPC 124 A relating to sedition and the motive of the government.

Mumbai police had arrested Trivedi last weekend after a city lawyer, who is said to be a member of Republic Party of India (also a law student) had filed a complaint in December 2011 and charged him with sedition for insulting national emblems and the constitution during the anti-corruption movement led by Anna Hazare. The complainant had made a specific mention about Trivedi’s cartoon depicting the national emblem with three wolves instead of lions and the words Bhrashtameva Jayate (corruption only triumphs) in place of Satyameva Jayate. One of his cartoons shows parliament building as a lavatory buzzing with flies.

Since a complaint was filed the government could have filed a charge sheet and left the matter for the court to decide instead of arresting and jailing him, a move which has severely backfired on the government. Though the constitution ensures freedom of speech and expression it has certainly laid down that every citizen must respect the national symbols. In the case of Trivedi it should have been left to the court to decide whether he insulted national symbols or not.

Following Trivedi’s arrest there is every reason to believe that the scandal-hit government was trying to muzzle the voices of anti-corruption activists involved in the crusade against corruption spearheaded by Anna Hazare. It also shows that the government has become intolerant towards criticism, which is an essential part of parliamentary democracy. It may be recalled here that Trivedi was closely involved with Anna Hazare’s crusade against corruption wherein many of his cartoons were displayed during the protests.

To make matters worse for the government Aseem Trivedi turned out to be a tough nut to crack. If the television images of a tousle-haired, bearded and slogan shouting Trivedi were an epitome of courage and conviction even as he was bundled into the patrol car, his intransigent and no-nonsense attitude to refuse the services of a lawyer and not to seek bail endeared him to those who thought him as a new youth icon who made the government bend backwards. In fact Aseem Trivedi was granted bail following a PIL filed by a lawyer and he agreed to come out of the jail only after Maharashtra Home Minister R R Patil assured him that sedition charges against him would be reviewed.

Aseem Trivedi’s arrest and subsequent release raises many questions especially with regard to the political intolerance exhibited by our politicians whose scandals speak louder than their actions both inside and outside the parliament. Trivedi is the new face of our fight against corruption and he has shown that intolerance (from the public) has no place in our democracy. He has also shown that the government’s efforts to smoothen the dissenting voices will not be taken lying down. Though the issue of offensive cartoons that rocked the parliament a few months ago, forcing the NCERT to purge them can be viewed as a victory of intolerance, Trivedi’s gumption that forced the government to release him from jail can be seen as a victory for all those who value freedom of speech and expression as a fundamental right.

Though Trivedi was intensely involved in Anna Hazar’s crusade against corruption where cartoons were used during protests under the series “cartoons against corruption”, he remained a nonentity till now. Ironically it was his recent arrest that has catapulted him to national fame signifying his involvement in the crusade against corruption.

Today, thanks to the government’s desperate bid to smother public opinion by way of arresting him, Trivedi, a not-so-known cartoonist has become a youth celebrity, a national hero, a symbol of free speech and a rallying point for all those who are leading a crusade against corruption. Just as his favourite quote says, Trivedi has won!

India is democratic country and we will change our rules according to our convenient. i.e. If any one burn effigy of National leaders/watch blue film in parliament it is not a crime but if any one draws cartoon of some person is criminal.

The unnecessary attention by the media made him a hero. I did watch his interview on the CNN-IBN and some other national TV channels yesterday night, and I have concluded that it was a waste of time watching somebody as him speak on a debate with other eminent cartoonists. To me this is another form of extremism. I do not believe that the Mahrashtra Police did the right thing by pressing sedition charges, but in the end it was not worthwhile making this an issue of national debate and waste prime time national TV space. To with his cartoon, gone are the days of the great's like Laxman and Mario Miranda, who were subtle yet far more effective than quacks like Aseem

Nagesh Nayak, If sanskrit is supreme, then how many people speak it today?. Somebody has commented about the Chinese not being bothered by english. I think that person is simply not aware of the reality. China is going overboard these days in trying to make its people learn english. They clearly feel that they could have been much ahead if the english skills of its citizens were better. Every language has its own place, beauty and rich history and therefore just to get even with each other do not try to put down a language. There are many westerners who have come to India studied our languages and translated the great works from these languages into english, french, german etc. Similarly many great writers of Indian languages have translated works from english, french, latin etc into indian languages. Also please try to understand that for one to be successful in life in today's world, one has to be good in english and this is true for a businessman who wants to expand his business overseas, or for a career minded individual who wants to succeed in a global environment.

When I had visited B'lore the first time I saw boot polisher's speaking in English, without proper grammer, it was some where near Brigade Road. Mind you, one more thing if a Mangi meet's a Mangi any where, if the conversation was in English initially, when they know they are from Tulunadu they suddenly switch over to Tulu, no religion will come in between there. So I hope the point is clear

Ravi Bhaskar Shenava, you are 100% correct. Whoever insults, Gandhiji, National Flag, and Independence Day, should not be spared. Strict legal action should be taken against such people . Moreover, Lawyers who know the Laws of the Land thoroughly should not have given such Statement in Ujire on the eve of Independence day just to please his RSS bosses.
The same Lawyer had given another insulting statement earlier by telling in a Jain Religious meeting that ' Only after a human being expends his Karma by taking 100 births as Shoodra, he can take birth as a Jain' .
This was an open insult to Shoodras (Lower Castes).
We have some pseudo-intellectuals who think that they can find fault with great Mahatma Gandhiji only on the basis of one letter he had written to Sister Niveditha , without ascertaining the actual background. Then, what about the "Rasikathe" and many "Kalyana" of Puranic Gods, hermits, Rushis, Devendra and his Narthakis ?

Just remember guys, The national symbols, our flag and our monuments do not belong to the congress, BJP or any other political parties. They are our pride and belong to each one of us.There is no reason to desecrate, destroy or in any way insult our national symbols if you have an issue with the congress or any other party for that matter. This joker Trivedi has crossed all limits and he should be punished. Even the moron who vandalised the martyr's monument in Bombay was expressing his anger when he did what he did. The whole nation condemned him, and rightly so. Therefore why these double standards with this Trivedi. To me he is not a hero, but a big stupid zero. Comming back to politicians like the Home Minister of Maharastra, the less said the better. He is too busy chasing the poor bar dancers and waitresses who are simply earning their living, partying students and young utives etc and he neither has the brains, right attitude or capacity to handle law and order, terrorism, farmer suicides, gang wars, police reforms and other serious issues. He was kicked out after 9/11 and then quietly brought back after the next elections when as usual our public memory had faded.

It is a general perception that in Mangalore large number of people think having proficiancy in English lanhuage is every thing as shown in their body language and usual behavior in public, though if one peeps into their insite they are big zeros many times. To cite an example, one of my friend who is from Bangalore posted in one of the PSU bank as probationery officer. He was totally new to Mangalore. He was travelling daily from Ballalbagh to Hampankatta in city bus.He used to observe a lady with high dress and style used to speak in English loudly only even with poor bus conductor.Later one day it was understood that the particular lady is employed in a tetile show room for Rs.3000 monthly salary! My intension is not to down grade her profession but only to highlight how we interpret things/behave in our daily life.'High thinking and simple living' has totally gone by now a days......

An administrative blunder has made a stupid, hero overnight. But what is sickening is the support he received from so called 'youngistan'. While we take pride in our young generation often branding them to be the future responsible citizens of India, I feel we are actually hoping too much from our youngsters. Despite the access to education, modernity, exposure, majority of young India still goes by herd mentality without even trying to use their 'reasoning'. Someone might say that youngsters are fed up with the system, corruption and crime around them and hence they are taking up cudgels. But is it the case actually? I don't think so. The fact is that today's youngsters are not searching for role models but saviours. They find it hard to have their own convictions, stand and live by them. Their convictions change as often as their jobs and even girl/boy friends. Their guts and gumptions are limited to petty college and street fights but not for real cause. They are more and more becoming blind followers of people who have mastered the art becoming SAVIOURS. True, there is a growing dissent among majority Indians about the ruling class, their corruption, crimes and mockery of democracy. But sadly this growing dissent isn't channelled properly neither it is made the MEANS to achieve the END but dissent itself has become an END. Look at the present fiasco involving Aseem. Amidst all the hype majority of the youngsters have blatantly forgotten that what he did indeed was wrong and punishable. We are fighting against political class challenging their arm-twisting tactics branding them anti-nationals but are creating an alternative CLASS which is not very different from the existing lot. India today is not in need of SAVIOURS but role models but sadly there's hardly anyone up in the horizon. Saviours' mission is to save but role models inspire and inspiration is the key to aspiration and with due perspiration can bring about required transition.

Aseem Trivedi is arrested on Charges of sedition (Desha Droha) for drawing some cartoons showing how politicians have degraded the Tricolour,Parliament House & Contitution.
But in Ujire/Belthangadi a Criminal Lawyer has committed bigger crime than this, but he has been let free even though some nationalist organization have filed FIR against him in Belthangadi Police station.
Firstly, this Lawyer told on 14th August that 15th August should be celebrated as "Black Day" and not as Independence day.

Secondly he told that Gandhiji cannot be called as "Father of the Nation" because he fathered only East & West Pakistan, and Bharath was already existing even before Gandhiji was born. Thirdly he told that his dream is to fly 'Saffron Flag' on Red fort at New Delhi in the place of 'Tricolour'.
All these three points amount to Sedition !
