Trinamool Withdraws Support to UPA

Trinamool Withdraws Support to UPA

Watch Video

Kolkata, Sep 18 (IANS): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Tuesday withdrew her Trinamool Congress party's support to the UPA government, but both she and the Congress indicated a last minute patch up may still be possible.

Banerjee announced the unexpected decision after a three-hour meeting of party leaders in Kolkata, four days after the central government unleashed a wave of reforms aimed at kickstarting a stagnant economy.

At her aggressive best, Banerjee told the media that Trinamool's six ministers -- one cabinet and five ministers of state -- would submit their resignations to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New Delhi Friday.

"We can't be a party to anti-people decisions. We had expected the government would roll back their decisions. But they have decided against it.

"So we ... are withdrawing our support from UPA-2," she said, speaking mainly in Bengali.

"This government has lost its credibility," she added.

However, Banerjee gave a lifeline to UPA, saying she would reconsider withdrawal of support if the government took back its decision to allow foreign direct investment (FDI) in multi-brand retail, cut the hiked diesel prices by Rs.3, and raised the number of subsidised cooking gas cylinders each household can get in a year to 12.

Simultaneously, the Congress said Tuesday night that it still viewed the Trinamool as a valuable ally.

"Till a final decision is taken, we consider the Trinamool a valuable ally," Congress general secretary Janardan Dwivedi said.

The Trinamool, with 19 members in the 545-seat Lok Sabha, was the second largest constituent in the multi-party UPA.

This would make the UPA more dependent on the Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party, which extend outside legislative support to the UPA regime.

Within minutes, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) asked the government to prove its majority in the Lok Sabha.

Marxist leader Sitaram Yechury suggested that Banerjee could still go back on her decision. "We should wait till Friday," added Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Lalu Prasad.

At her presser, Banerjee lashed out at the Congress, saying the FDI decision was unveiled to divert attention from the coal blocks allocation controversy involving the government.

She accused the Congress of acting unilaterally, without giving respect to its allies. "We cannot tolerate this."

"If FDI is allowed in retail market, where will the retailers go? There will be a disaster," she said.

Banerjee said she spoke to UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi four days back, requesting her to persuade the government to roll back the decisions on FDI, diesel and cooking gas cylinders.

"But nothing of that sort happened."

The Trinamool chief demanded to know why the government was not bringing back the huge volumes of black money allegedly stashed by Indians in foreign banks.

"Somebody has to bell the cat," she said, explaining her decision Friday.

A day after the government announced its economic decisions, Banerjee had declared that her party would take "hard decisions" if these were not taken back. Her 72-hour deadline ended Monday.

The Trinamool-UPA break-up comes two days before a nationwide strike called Thursday by all opposition parties against the economic decisions.

Like this message board, Indian politics is so polarised. The opposition will oppose just because they are in the opposition and the ruling party will do whatever it pleases because they are in power. The sad reality is that the people are take for a ride which makes a great example for weak democracy. God save us all from the clutches of these sick politicians.

Yes man, Congress are aware of nations problems and trying to solve even if they have to use rickshaw for their campaign, thus saving precious fuel etc. They are pro-people unlike BJP etc - they need Volvo buses, posh cars which consume such a lot of fuel.
Is there a difference there and love for the people of our nation by the Congress

If Congress justifies removing subsidy on LPG Cylinders, it should also remove reservation for SC/ST, OBC, Minority and other like classes. Reservation should be based on financial status. Congress does not do this because of vote bank. Congress are increasing reservations, internal reservations day by day.

    lukas, malpe,

It was the ambedkar who started reservartion for SC/ST in 1950 to up-lift the community. Why can't Congress stop this reservation system if you think subsidy has to be removed for LPG? Ondu kannige BENNE, mattondu kannige SUNNA?

Withdraw of support is doubtful. Why a window is provided till friday ? why the minister and minister of states will walk to PM and hand in resignation - it can be down by fax. The whole thing is nothing but drama. It's a calculated game plan to divert peoples attention from Coalgate scam.
Congress' sin of being party to 2G scam, CWG scam, Adarsh scam, Coal scam, Irrigation scam in Maharashtra cannot be washed away by FDI.

Congress is simply trying to divert attention from the corruption issues by bringing in FDI, which no doubt is a positive step, provided the pros and cons are discussed with all stakeholders and not just the corporate. It would be highly unfortunate if people ignore all the scams that Congress led UPA has indulged in, which is now proving to be even more evident after various coal blocks belonging to Congress Ministers (Jindals, Subodh Kant Sahai's relatives etc.) are being deallocated with barely any news coverage. Do not be fooled people.

the need of middlemen or the commission agent gets eliminated which saves these farmers from lot of botheration and wastage of their product.

Good Decision by Mamata, if she sticks to her decision. The congress government is totally useless. If they have provided us good governance, easily they could have avoided all this price hike. FDI in retail, is totally useless proposal. After 6 decades of independece, we are still looking for FDI in retail is really shamefull. FDI is acceptable only in specialized sector. Congress brought this issue only to divert the issue of Coal gate. Otherwise what is the reason for delaying this reforms for 3 years? Now only they realised the importance after totally distroying the economy?.

Congress is totally involved in corruption and now their slogan to common man is " We have eradicated our poverty and if you want eradicate your proverty yourself". They are not in a position to clarify their deeds in coal gate and say silence is the best reply. The known fact is when you are busy in eating how can you talk? ( Beta Khaathe waqt bolte nahi"). Till today evening even congress is telling that DIDI is trusted ally. Why congress not taken TMC into confidence before taking the decision?. Now many congress supporters in Daiji telling that mamta is not trust worthy, what a funny observation?. Infact Mulayam, Maya, DMK and Lalu are forced to support congress due to CBI. Every one knows they are corrupt and CBI enquiry is going on. Please think when we can get justice in above cases? if this is the case when yeddi' s case will be solved by CBI?. The reason is as long as the case drags they can be black mailed. But some of our poor readers are telling Mamata is black mailing congress. Any one can understand this, but I am sure some so called intellectuals will never understand.

GOLDEN.......two important issues were raised with out home work
Subsidy.....If India continues to offer subsidy, shorty India will be called as JUNK STATE
    (investment wise)

FDI in retail because it is right step in the direction of free market. It will create employment, more investment, competitive prices, helps in growth etc.Apart from that FDI in retail subject to approval of state govt and it's operation could be limited to mega cities which may give sleepless night to Reliance like companies .These indigenous players made more money in 2G AND OTHER VENTURES.

About Subsidy..the methods are wrong. Diesel fuel used by farmers are below 25% and 'HAVES' diesel car owners are also using same subsided diesel.Likewise, subsidised LPG 'Haves'are using more Cylinders than haves not

    Well Done Mamata Didi

Congress want to make all the corporates rich with their so called reform policy. They never think about AAM ADMI WHICH THEY LOUDED ON THEIR ELECTION MANIFESTO.

Why cant government give subsidy for diesel and cooking gas? What is the hurry in bringing FDI in multi brand retails. We have domestic multibrand retails, BIG BAZAR, MORE, RELIANCE...

The amount of revenue lost due to 2G & coalgate scam could have been enough to bring down prices of the these item.

I WISH ALL SENSIBLE EDUCATED CITIZEN OF INDIA HELP TO MAKE UPA A HISTORY AFTER NEXT ELECTION. AFTER 2014 ELECTION EVERYONE SHOULD SAY "THERE WAS A PARTY CALLED CONGRESS" THERE WAS A ALLIANCE CALLED UPA.

THUMBS DOWN TO UPA... AND ITS REFORM POLICIES...
