Sri Lanka Promotes Ceylon Tea in US

Washington, Sep 27 (IANS): Sri Lanka is aggressively promoting its famed Ceylon Tea in the US.

Along with the Sri Lanka Tea Board, the Sri Lankan embassy here has launched a vigorous campaign to boost the product, an embassy statement said.

The aim is to strategically and effectively position Ceylon Tea in the US, which is experiencing a notable increase of tea consumption.

Ambassador Jaliya Wickramasuriya underscored the immense opportunities in the steadily growing US market for Sri Lankan tea producers.

"Today the US has become the second largest tea importer and the sixth largest tea consuming country in the world," he said.

And while Sri Lanka was the third largest tea exporter in the world, it had only three percent market share in the US, he added.

The best Ceylon Tea comes from Sri Lanka's seven agro-climatic regions: Dimbula, Nuwara Eliya, Uda Pussellawa, Sabaragmuwa, Uva, Kandy and Ruhuna.
