Blaan. M - When the govt changed the names of International cities like Bombay to Mumbai, Culcutta to Kolkatta, Madras to Chennai, Bangalore to Bengaluru, Trivendrum to Tiruvanathapuram, Cochin to Kochi, Aleppy to Alapuzha, Cannanore to Kannur, Quilon to Kollam, Poona to Pune, Thana to Thane, Baroda to Vadodra, Banaras to Varnasi, Vizag to Vishakapatnam, Bejwada to Vijayawada, or Orissa state to Odisha, or when new districts were carved out, or district names were changed in Tamilnadu as Ambedkar district, or Periyar dist, or Bengaluru outskirts was named as Ramanagar dist, or when Udupi-Yadagiri-Gadag-Koppala-Bagalkot-Chamrajanagar-Davangere-Haveri dists were newly formed, who paid the expenses of private individuals or firms ? Of course people bore it from their own pockets happily.

Why will the Government spend on Individual firms, offices and companies. The expenses will be from the pocket of the individuals. Will you be responsible or accountable for all those payments. I am sure you will take one step back and run away without notice when you have to pay from your pocket.

I guess the name Kanara must have come portuguese and not the British. After establishing their base at Goa, soo the Portuguese started to eye the ports in the neighbourhood and thriving trading center of Managalore became one of their targets due to the trade it had with Arabs.

Not before long in the first half of 16th century they were in Mangalore and Bantwal.

For the lands beyond Goas boundary, which were under the rule of Kannada Kings, they gave a name called , Kanara (meaning Kannada land.

It's unfortunate that we identify our land with a tag that was given by ignorant Portuguese traders and fortune hunters.

If you lay aside the expenses involved and inconveniences, this is very much a reasonable demand.

But why Mangalore Jille, why not Tulunadu. Mangalore doesnt represent the whole of the District, it's just a place, one of the places.

Language tulu and its culture is the identity of this whole place. If we go by common sense Mangalore and Udupi to me named, Northern Tulu nadu and Southern Tulunadu.

Tulu Nadu is appropriate and most suitable name for coastal twin districts north tulunadu (Udupi) and south tulunadu(Mangalore). Tulu is the language this soil not the kannada. Kannada is absolutely a foreign language to this area. I fully support in this basis even though my mother tongue is konkani

During the British rule, the coastal districts of Karnataka were called North Canara & South Canara. After independence the spelling of Canara was modified to Kanara. In the 70s the state was renamed from Mysore State to Karnataka and the districts as Dakshina & Uttara Kannada. I find no sense in calling the 2 coastal districts as 'Kannada' where the language is spoken by a small minority. The Govt. must note that unlike other states, Karnataka is a multilingual state. So due recognition must be accorded to all native languages in some form or the other. Therefore in order to identify with the languages spoken in the coastal districts, I strongly feel that DK should be renamed as Tulu Nadu and UK as Konkan District, where Tulu and Konkani are the respective major languages of these two districts. It is to be noted that Coorg was renamed as Kodagu, thus giving an identity to Kodavu language.

Blaan Mendonca USA - Govt is spending crores of rupees EVERY MONTH on Hindi language - rubber stamps, seals, letter-heads, Bank documents, circulars and also salary of useless Hindi-Adhikari, which are all sheer unproductive expenses for all Public Sector undertakings. In this case of district name change, we have to spend just few lakhs that too once in a life time, which is just a fraction of what we spend on Hindi every month in Karnataka.
Sentiments have more value than synthetic-patriotism.

People who are interested in changing name are taking the whole community backwards to old generation. They do not want to move forward. These people who want to change the name are jealous of the new generation. All the letter heads of Government documents have to be changed even the offices run by public or individual have to change their business letterheads, signboards have to be changed, addresses have to be changed, street Indicators have to be changed. Google Maps, Yahoo maps, Global positioning system, I-phone 5 maps everywhere there will be changes. What about birth certificate, marriage certificates, Divorce certificates, School College certificates, Merit certificates, District level games competition certificates. Who will be responsible and accountable for all the expenses required to do the changes.

It is quite heartening to learn that at last some prominent Karnataka scholars including Freedom fighters, have taken a delegation to Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar and submitted a memorandum for change of the names of two coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada & Uttara Kannada as Mangalore Jille & Karwar Jille. This name change will not evoke any opposition from local people since the name DK-UK does not have any emotional attachment for the people of these two districts.
Besides in the commercial world BRAND VALUE is more important and the word MANGALORE or MANGALOREANS has immense Brand Value in Mumbai & Gulf Countries, signifying Geographical and Intellectual specialty. Whereas the Word Dakshina Kannada or Dakshina Kannadigas does not evoke same Brand value in Commercial or Artistic world.

Dear Readers The need of the hour is Separate Coastal Karnataka State consisting of D.K., Udupi and Uttara kannada Districts. Many of the comments have suggested to have separate State consisting of D.K. and Udupi and Uttara Kannada Districts. I fully endorse these views.
We have all the resources and other facilities but we receive step motherly treatments in our own State when it comes to allocation of funds and other resources and administrative and allied maters.

ONE EXAMPLE:Just see the fate of the power situation here now, having load shedding daily since a week, having 1200 Mega Watts power station at Padubidri, Udupi District, only 5% of the produced power is allocated to Mescom jurisdictional Area consisting of D.K., Udupi, Chickmagalur and Shiomoga Districts and rest of the entire power is evacuated through the newly commissioned 400 KV High Tension line which is connected to the grid recently at Shanthigram at Hassan for use by rest of the State and Others specially Bangalore and Hubli areas. Lot of people here lost their land for the power plant and facing other problems at the power plant site and their sacrifices have gone and going down the drain daily. In BESCOM, GESCOM, HESCOM and CHESCOM areas of the State, where there is lot of misuse of power including theft of electricity, they get reward by higher allocation of power and in the Mescom, only D.K. and Udupi consumers pay the bills and recovery is 98% and these are the facts. Now we have the load shedding which is effected by the KPTCL(Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited) Load Centre at Bangalore. This is only one example and we are silent spectators to these happenings and our Rules do not bother to hear the voice of the people here.

The need of the hour is not change of name of D.K. District, but a SEPERATE COASTAL KARNATAKA STATE.
    Jai Hind.

Since this coastal KARNATAKA is full of natural resources and also well Educated and Intelligent citizens are there not only that we hv potential leaders among us.
MOST importatnt thing that all our coastal people are full of LOVE, PEACE AND HUMANITY.Just see the Educational Institutes, Hospitals, Industry etc all those needy things we hv bcoz our ancestors are VERY INTELIGENT GENERATION. They hv given us all these benefits. So, only the new generation need to follow thier footsteps and we can achive the goal called''KARAVALI RAJYA''.
I request all the citizens to come together and demand for an INDEPENDENT STATE CALLED KARAVAL RAJYA.
I am sure our d STATE will be a role model for the NATION bcoz the coastal citizens are HONEST AND HUMBLE, THEY ARE FULL OF PEACE,LOVE AND HUMANITY.

Soon our "broadminded bindas tuluwas" & tuluva culture will be reduced. As some one said a lot of names have already been changed to kannada names ,,,some eg like jappina mogaru, moodabidire, uppinangadi etc etc.. .. Sanskrit lovers are still more dangerous. They have changed the names of our revered Bhootha-Daiva itself from Tulu to Sanscrit.
    Example: Koridappu=Kukkutamoorthy, Maisandaya=Mahishamoorti,Jumadi=Dhoomavati,Kallurti=Pashaanamoorthy,Panjurli=Varahamoorthy, Kodamandaya=Kumbhakantini,Nagabrahmha=Vaasuki,Pilichandi=Vyaghra chamundi so on...

In Mumbai if u say 'I am a Dakshina Kannadiga' no one will recognize your native place. But if you say I am a 'Mangalorean' immediately they recognize it and also u will receive more respect than any other south Indians. Similarly the word "Karwari" is more prevelent in Mumbai for Uttara Kannada people.
The legendary Gurudatt was always called as Mangalorean in Bollywood even though he was from Udupi district (Padukone village). Aishwarya, Sunil Shetty, Shilpa, Suman Kalyanpur, Krishna kalle, Girish Karnad, Shyam Benegal, Cricketers Ravi Shastry, Budhi Kundaran, Ram Sundaram, Badminton Champion Prakash Padukone, Encounter specialists like Daya Nayak, Prakash Bhandary & Ajay Kumar Bhandary, all these people were called as MANGALOREANS only and not as KANNADIGAS, and Cricketers like Bapu Nadkarni, Manjrekar, Suru Nayak, Salil Ankola were called as KARWARIS.
A columnist for the Kannada weekly Gauri Lankesh namely - Praveen. S. Shetty of Mumbai has written several articles in Kannada & English newspapers suggesting this name change OF DK & UK since last 25 years, and luckily now these the so called intellectuals have taken up the same.

"Dakshina Kannada" a nice name do not obliterate from the map. Specially the identity of "Kannada" at least in two districts of Karnataka. What is the purpose of bringing in additional "Jille" in the name? In that case every district has to be called like "Bidar Jille, Belgaum Jille...." etc? Since Mangalore has other names like, Kudla, Kodiyaal, Manalapuram (as Malayali's call), it is appropriate to keep the name "Dakshina Kannada" intact.

During British Rule Entire coastal Karnataka was in Madras presidency and Honnavara was district Hear quarters. Since it was the only one Kannada speaking area in Madras presidency the British named it as Kanara district in 1799, the word Kanara or Canara being the corrupt form of Kannada in British tongue.
Later on for administrative convenience this Kanara dist was bifurcated into two in 1859 and called North Kanara & South Kanara by the British and the HQ of NK was shifted to Karwar from Honnavar and the HQ of Southern district was set up at Mangalore. South Kanara was retained under Madras Presidency but North Kanara district was merged with Bombay Presidency by British in 1862. Later on Karnataka Govt Kannadized these district names by literally translating their English Names north Kanara & South Kanara in to Dakshina & Uttara kannada. So, the name now we have is purely british names and they do not have any historical significance.
Only Kodagu (Coorg) district has ancient historical names. Rest of the districts of karnataka do not have any historical names. All district names are based on district Head Quarter only except DK & UK. So there is nothing wrong in changing the names of DK & UK to match their dist Head quarters like all other districts, except Kodagu.

Mangalore is famous for the people and the culture. In Dakshina Kannada and Udupi there is no mention of Mangalore or Tulu, still we proudly call ourself as Tuluvas, Mangalorians, Kodladakulu, We will continue to do the same irrespective of the name of the districts.

These so called intellectuals can concentrate on other important issues faced by this region, Changing the name does not serve any purpose to anyone.

Khalid Tanneerbhavei & Patric Jeppu are right. Name of our District should be Tulu Naadu. But since Indians are addicted to abbreviating every name, Tulu Nadu may be written as T.N. in the letters, and the Postal authority may send such letters to Tamil Nadu (T.N), just like the letter addressed to U.K. (Uttara Kannada) was sent to United Kingdom (England) and letter addressed to Honnavara (U.K) was sent to Hanover (Germany)
    P. Halambi who is in the committee, is from Udupi district (Kundapura), he is the present president of Kannada Sahithya Parishat.

Some people has the habit of accepting and some have rejecting, without taking into consideration the pros and cons, whether it appeals it or not.

First of all, when we say, wer are democratic country, Panchayat raj, then the people of DK and UK should be taken into confidence and ask them is the name suits the local community.

AS such people from DK and Udupi districts, when they move out of this place, they call themselves Mangaloreans or Kudladakulu. Even so, even people from Kundapur also say they are Mangaloreans.

Before changing any name, first get the local people approval instead of creating some new problem. All the writers here majority of them are bramins, please take the opinion of Shetty, Mogaveerss, Poojary and all Dalits & others opinion too.

Under the leadership of D M Chidananda Murthy, senior freedom fighter H S Doreswamy, former Sahithya Akademy president Prof M H Krishnayya, Kannada Geleyara Balaga co-ordinator R Nam Chandrashekara, writers K N Bhagwan, K H Narasimha Murthy and others, the delegation presented a memorandom to CM urging for a change in the names. The memorandum includes the signatures of Kannada greats Dr G S Shivarudrappa, Prof L S Sheshagiri Rao, P Halambi and Dr Vijaya. In this list is there any name of our Tuluvas. Who is this people? to change the name of DK. Tuluvas knows, what name should be given to their place. It should be a Tulunadu. This narrow mentality people's simple agenda is removing Tulu language from the region. It is never possible to them, Tulu, Byari and Konkani languages still alive without any script because of it's potential. Please, love languages. Tuluvas knows what to do for their district. Don't impose any language on people by force. Let them their own language for communication. In schools during free hour teachers are forcing students to talk only in Kannada is also not good. Our mother language is Konkani, Tulu and Byari, we love our mother languages. And also we love our state Language Kannada. So this delegation is nothing but a nonsense.

When both 'Dakshina Kannada' and 'Uttara Kannda' names are already in pure Kannada, why this move for a name change? Who needs a name change? Kannada writers and intellectuals should focus on larger issues affecting lives of Kannadigas.
