Washington, Sep 29 (IANS/RIA Novosti): US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced Friday the US government will provide millions of additional dollars in assistance to the Syrian opposition.
"The regime of Bashar al-Assad must come to an end so that the suffering of the Syrian people can stop and a
new dawn can begin," said Clinton at a meeting of the Friends of Syria Group in New York.
Clinton announced an additional $30 million to help with food, water, blankets, and other humanitarian assistance.
"As more parts of Syria's control slip from the regime to the opposition, we're supporting civilian opposition groups as they begin providing essential services -- reopening schools, rebuilding homes, and the other necessities of life," Clinton told the group.
Clinton also pledged an additional $15 million of non-lethal aid to support Syrian civilian opposition groups, bumping the total US commitment to humanitarian funding for Syria to more than $130 million so far.
According to reports at least 30,000 people have died during Syria's 18-month uprising.
